Beddit Reflection
Most people who grow sluggish throughout the day can’t look forward to anything more than when their heads hit the pillow at the end of a long day. But sometimes a restful nights sleep is not what follows. For anyone who has trouble sleeping they know what its like to wake up feeling unsatisfied and wanting to know how to fix this. With the Beddit bluetooth sleep monitor anyone can track their sleep quality, total sleep time, the time they fall asleep, their heart rate while sleeping, their sleep cycles, whether they were snoring, and more. This type of knowledge is very useful for those who have busy lives and need the energy their bodies are supposed to provide for them after a nights sleep. The Beddit could help improve the quality of peoples lives by helping them realize what goes wrong while they are sleeping and how to fix it. This could in the long run help contribute to overall healthy lifestyles and healthy life choices. Sleep technology could definitely have a large impact on the lives of those who need better sleep and for all people who have health concerns and like to like healthy lifestyles.
Alter G Reflection
The Alter G seems like it could be apart of the movement in rapidly growing health products. Unlike smart watches and tech apps the Alter G is more familiar and puts a more high tech spin on an age old favorite, the treadmill. Like a treadmill the Alter G has a spinning belt where patients would run on top of. Whats new however is the belt like cradle users step into that surrounds their waists and works to lift them up and relieve pressure. This technology can be used to rehabilitate from surgeries or injuries, help people lose weight, and improve overall running performance. It is designed to allow patients to run with less of the weight they carry, that is where the belt comes into play. By securing the belt around your waist you can adjust how much of your weight it carries, thus creating the altered gravity experience. This type of technology could be immensely helpful in our society it could lower the obesity and overweight percentage that has reached a recent high of 67%. It could encourage those who have trouble moving around to try something new that actually works and could be the inhibitor in a healthy reaction.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was an outstanding success on creating a social media buzz. Not only did the challenge get people involved but also kept people interested; from comical ice bucket “fails” to outrageous donations made by stars like Charlie Sheen. The Ice Bucket Challenge demonstrated just how powerful social media is and the impact that can be made with it. Overall the challenge raised roughly 220 million dollars. It also raised awareness and gave anyone the chance to participate. Ideally the perfect package, I believe the success of the challenge had very much to do with the lack of exclusion, anyone could participate and post a picture or video to raise awareness. The Ice Bucket Challenge was an incredible way to raise awareness and funds for all those who suffer from or are affected by this disease and I believe that if another challenge were to surface through social media that benefited a cause I would be more than happy to participate.
Day Before Tomorrow Reflection
I found The Day Before Tomorrow both informative as well as slightly alarming. The episode did an extensive job of educating the viewer on new health technology emerging, some of which that include ways to track your health, Google Glass, robotics, and access to records.
I thought the Google glass seemed to be a very useful and helpful tool when it comes to understanding and recording surgery. I believe the Google Glass could be used to educate students heading into the health field especially those who plan on working in high intensity areas like the operating room. I also found the idea of One medical very attractive because it allowed you to choose your doctor as well as request prescriptions all from an app on your phone.
However some of the topics they discussed made me feel as if I wouldn’t want to use them, like the robots and access to records through the phone. I feel as if being able to access records through the phone could be risky because of hackers, perhaps if they had elaborated more on the ways they are keeping that shared information safe it would have been more inviting to me. The idea of using robots in the operating room makes me feel uneasy because of the jobs it takes away. Not only in the operating room but as well as assistants, I feel slimming the job market is wrong when so many people are unemployed.
Health App Review: Stop Breathe and Think
Platform(s): The App review states it is compatible with Apple IOS, Android, and Web products.
Goals and outcomes for the App: The goal of the app is to improve positive thoughts and decrease stress and negativity through mindfulness and meditation.
Strengths (pros) The app is very easy to use and has a very user friendly layout. The app allows you to check in as many times as you would like throughout the day. A "check in" consists of a quick five step page sweep of how you are feeling for the day, this takes less than a minute. The fifth step of the check in provides you with "Your Results" which includes three or more meditations and a quick explanation of the goals of each meditation based on what feelings you entered. The app is very straight forward and the meditations are led for you so anyone can enjoy a relaxing session.
Weaknesses (cons) They do offer some meditations I wanted to try that were not free, however the purchase of those meditations went to non for profit organizations, so in my eyes worth the small payment and not much of a "con."
Areas or Features for improvement I wasn't the biggest fan of the voices used to lead the meditations the woman's voice was very airy. However, anyone leading a meditation is supposed to be soft spoken and sound very similar to the voices used. Just personal preference.
For whom do you think this app is best suited? I feel this app can be for anyone and everyone it is like I said above, user friendly and it offers a sense of renewed self contentedness. Perhaps it would be best for people with anxiety or a beginner to meditation, though it could be helpful to anyone who uses it.
Will you continue to use this app after this review? I was very pleased with this assignment and also very happy our TA recommended I test this app, and I will continue to use it after the assignment.
Did this app motivate you to do more of what it was asking? After testing out the app I did feel more motivated to make more time for meditation and I find the app made it easier to focus and make time to do so.
Did this app educate or inform you on information you previously did not know? The app did help to better inform me on ways to meditate as well as expanded my mind to allow me to practice meditation in more spaces than just my room. For example on my walk to class, or on the bus, even on a drive home. Meditation can take place anywhere and does not have to be done necessarily with your eyes closed, it can be as simple as taking a couple deep breathes or clearing your mind for a couple minutes at a time.
Overall App Rating – Is it any good? (Borrowed from Common Sense Media)
I would have given the app a five star rating, rating it as "the best" however, I've never used any other meditating apps prior to compare it too.
Really good
