“They Don’t Care About Our Health”: Hunger Striker at Otay Mesa ICE Jail Speaks Out as COVID Spreads
As COVID-19 infections continue to rise behind bars, we go inside the Otay Mesa Detention Center in California to speak with Anthony Alexandre, a longtime U.S. resident of Haitian descent, who describes conditions at the for-profit jail, run by private prison company CoreCivic, which has seen a mass outbreak of COVID-19, leading to at least 167 infections and one death. “Basically, CoreCivic is telling us they do not care about our health,” says Alexandre. “They do not care about anything else but their bottom line.”

Tortilla
Rather light for its size, and pretty thin. Some of the paper was actively rolled up inside the tortilla.
Meat
Good, but only about one quarter of the overall bulk. Complimented by the cheese nicely.
Ingredients
Fries, cheese, and pico de gallo. Most of it was in fact fries, which were good and crispy without being hardened. The pico was extremely on the cilantro side. The star of the show was probably the generous globs of mixed Colby cheese, which could be tasted in almost every bite.
Salsa
Extensive salsa bar with other veggies as well. Not were particularly hot, but the watery green with even more cilantro was the most flavorful..
Other
I’m south Otay Mesa and practically in San Ysidro. Despite the plainish exterior, the inside was clean, friendly, and well-lit. There is ample room all around, three fascades of windows as well and skylights. The menu displayed smoothly on the array of flat screens and custom tile art adorned every wall below a few Mexican TV channels. They are vehemently Cash Only, but there is an ATM on site. There’s a busy drive -thru and even though it’s open and busy 24/7, I wouldn’t be surprised if English were only uttered on site once or twice a week. I guess I looked Gringo enough that the cashier confirmed what a California Burrito was before completing my order.

7.5. No complaints except for the long drive on the 5 south.
