Hello!
Been confused about the other kin community for awhile now and hoping you can give me some answers?
I know that kff or kinning is different from otherkin by the fact that otherkin actually identify as non human- but what are the in depth requirements to use that label and properly say your otherkin?
Also is otherkinness linked to trauma? Do you have to have trauma in order to be able to be otherkin?
Sorry for asking questions that are probably common knowledge
That's literally it - you identify as nonhuman. Everything else is personal bells and whistles. If you look into yourself and go "yeah, that's not human," congratulations, you're otherkin. Any other requirement people try to put on it (shifts, species dysphoria, a certain amount of time questioning or level of "seriousness," etc.) is actually gatekeeping, at least in my opinion.
Some words on questioning and what it's "like" to be otherkin:
A general guide on questioning a kintype which has some very good general information/explanations, from @/shadowfae
A list of typical experiences for various alterhuman identities (note typical, not required or universal)
My general “kin resources” tag has A Lot in it, a lot of which is not going to be relevant to you specifically, but it’s there if you want to peruse it
You most certainly do not have to have trauma to be otherkin - for most of us I'd say our otherkinity doesn't stem from trauma, myself included.
