Chillin' at a She Wolves Nation event at Otis Lounge.
That night I met Kate, a friend of the She Wolves girl gang who frequented Otis Lounge. I told her how bad I wanted to dj to a crowd like this & after annoying her & pestering her about it she introduced me to someone in the little She Wolf sorority. Her friend, Xela, was pretty well known at Otis Lounge & could possibly help me get in the door with the owners to dj & thats exactly what she did on several occasions. I knew the importance in gaining Otis as venue as small it is it packs a lot of important movers & shakers from all over the San Francisco Bay Area. Young people in art, design, music, fashion & entrepreneurship. People I definitely wanted to be surrounded by.
Looking back over my blog re-reading my posts & I can't help but notice I left out some very key details in my transition to my position in the Bay Area music scene. You have to remember as a new dj stepping on the scene it's like diving into an ocean full of great white sharks. It was intimidating. Everyone on the scene knew each other from the club goers to the djs to the promoters & I didn't know anyone. So in searching for a "home" a place where I could dj regularly & get known I thought to start small. I didn't need a whole club to invite people to. That would be too much & I wouldn't be able to successfully fill the venue. I remembered back to my days DJ'ing with DJ Backside. One night we did a launch event for her online radio show "Hyphy Movement Radio". It would be held at a small lounge in Union Square San Francisco. I remembered the place because of the beautiful decor & decorated designs on the wall paper. The couches were white leather & it was small but the ambiance was sexy. The name of the venue was Otis. Now this was back in 2007 I'd plan a trip to San Francisco to poke my head in there to ask questions on how I could dj there. After several meetings & talks coming to the venue & spending money on drinks I came to a dead end. It just wasn't connecting or moving forward. So I had to let it go for a minute. When I came back to Otis it was to support David Ali & Mike Vegas' Above Ground event there. Going there for just that I wasn't thinking about dj'ing there anymore & had pretty much moved on. This night would change my mind though. After seeing the crowd of young, hip people & how the vibe of the party was just young, sexy & fun. For some reason it dawned on me that these aren't your normal party-goers but these collection of people were the movers & shakers or "the cool" of San Francisco. The very scene I very desperately wanted to obtain. Enter the She Wolves Nation.
