Big plans
This new industrial zone is, as far as I’ve gathered, it’s still a bit new to me, a joint government project aiming to establish the smalle city/village as the center of clothing manufacturing in Asia.
In the images above you can see a mockup of what the area is going to look like. It will contain two different areas for manufacturing, one for housing and one for schools (for teaching practical skills such as pattern making and sewing I presume, but there is also a building named 创新服装中心,which seems to be a design school).
Language barriers certainly exist so we will update as we learn and come to understand more.
The construction of the project seems to be largely financed by the government and then the individual buildings are sold off to individual companies who set up their own production. The area will pretty much be ‘self-sustaining’ in that it will have shops for fabric and other materials such as zippers, weaveries, sewing factories, sewing machine shops and repair shops and so on.
The central management has also signed an agreement with one or more villages to handle extra production when factories are out of capacity. The village workers will be paid piecemeal. Having this extra capacity is good as it means that workers hopefully wont be forced to worked long, long hours, but can instead have more stable lives and hours.
(please note that these details are not confirmed to be exact and we might update with new information regarding the factory and the area. we just talked for a short while for one of the staff in the main reception and read the boards. it is now nearing the chinese new year so almost everyone, in all of china, has gone back to be with their families, so nobody was really available to explain more)
You can read more about the project here:
The factory as it looks today. Drab and dull. Building is expected to finish by April this year (or next, if you're Chinese ;)
Hopefully we can add some color and feeling to it later.
on our way to Chengdu to check out the factory. Leilei's first time flying: super excited!
