Just wanted a quick discussion about this since you're a big Doctor Who fan. I honestly feel like I'm the only one that doesn't care if they reveal his name in the Series 7 finale, as the poster/title of it suggests. People are probably gonna be on my case about not being a "real" fan but I think after 50 years, knowing his NAME, while it may be dangerous information, won't be THAT bad. It won't ruin the future fun, excitement, scares and mystery for me at all. I'm still gonna watch it. :
tbqh, I don’t think it’ll be about revealing his name per se. because his name itself doesn’t really matter? the word, I mean. I think that the real power is behind what his name means. and the meaning can be interpreted in many ways: how it shaped the Doctor into becoming who he is, or how he shaped the name to suit him, if he changed the meaning in any way, why his name is so powerful, why he hasn’t used it in so long, why no one except for River (and Master and all the time-locked Time Lords) knows it and so on.
I think that Moffat kind of have this thing with names in general, for example:
Amelia Pond - a little girl from a fairy tale, not afraid of anything except for a crack in her wall; Amy Pond - she grows out of her beliefs, she gets hardened by being abandoned; Amy Williams - that change symbolises her maturing and growing up.
there’s a similar case with River: Melody Pond - Amy’s and Rory’s daughter, the woman who kills the Doctor; Mels - Amy’s and Rory’s best friend, with Melody still there, still willing to kill, and then we have River Song - a woman who decides about herself, who shapes herself and decides who she is.
it’s less pronounced with Rory, but we have Rory - Amy’s boyfriend from ‘the eleventh hour’, being in the shadow of the Doctor; and then we have Rory Williams - sweet and lovely, slightly awkward, then we have Rory the Roman, aka the ultimate badass in a Roman armour.
not to mention that in New Who there’s this whole thing with labeling/naming companions according to what they’ve done (‘bad wolf’, ‘the girl who walked the earth’, ‘the girl who waited’, etc).
so there is that. and I really think it won’t be about what his name sounds like, but what it means. because this has much more potential imho, it’d be much more fun to discover/dig into.
as for hearing the Doctor’s name… I assume it’d be in Gallifreyan, yeah? what if it has some crappy translation to English? like idek, what if he’s name translates to Seaman [immature joke time!] or Manfred or something like that? ;) that would be a disaster! ;)
unless Doctor’s name is ‘Sweetie’ and that’s why River calls him that all the time ;).
tl;dr: let’s just wait until the finale, we’ll cheer or despair then :).
