The vampire who wants to be human, no the other one.

‘You know, that one show with the vampire in it that wants to be human.’

How many shows (or books or movies) could that phrase be referring to? A lot, right? Even if they aren’t trying to become human, a lot of vampire media lets us know who the good vampire is by having him hate being a vampire. And it’s pretty tiresome, especially as the series never actually portrays being a vampire as that bad of a thing. Like, oh no, you live forever and have cool powers; the horror. Like Angel kind of had a reason with that whole soul thing (which is a dumb plot in and of itself, but that’s a take for later), but most of them don’t. Like, why did Nick from Forever Knight hate being a vampire? Or the main characters in all the 90s ‘we must kill our sires to become human again’ movies? It’s like writers think that if the character doesn’t hate being a vampire the readers/watchers won’t like him…which is wrong.

There is one, and one series only, that I have seen use this trope well; Moonlight. Mike isn’t too happy being a vampire because he was turned against his will. He admits that vampire powers are cool, he has vampire friends who love being vampires, and he doesn’t think he’s damned. He just misses food and sunbathing. Also, he’s a bit tired of watching his human friends die. Which are understandable complaints.

And the conclusion to the ‘I wish I was human’ arc is great and the spoilers are below.

Mike does get to become human and he does like it. But then something happens and he realizes that he can’t save his love interest, can’t do most of his old heroing at all, as a human and begs his friend to turn him back into a vampire.

And…doesn’t have a problem with being a vampire after that. It seems, to me at least, that his real issue was the lack of choice he had in his turning. He got a chance to be human, he liked it, but in the end, he decided that he needed to be a vampire to continue protecting people. I think this is the only series I’ve seen that has had the hero achieve their goal of becoming human only for them to realize that being a vampire was what allowed them to be a hero. Also, he now has a much cooler sire, even if Josef objects to the title.
