(The Westin Osaka)
My Culture - the Overseas Chinese
What is my community? Every immigrant faces this question, inevitably, at some point in their lives, a question that shapes the contours of our lives. What is my culture?
The Overseas Chinese community is one of the most storied diaspora groups anywhere. Expanding from the Chinese continent since the 1500s, oveseas Chinese have settled in what seem to be every corner of the globe. As a minority group, we have having come to play a dominant role in the economies of many countries and have contributed to the cultural melting pot in places like America. There are as many types of overseas Chinese as there are Chinese, but there are certain common cultural traits that are the most mainstream in large parts of our communities. The predominance of southern Chinese culture, for example (Cantonese etc) is a prominent one.
Like all diaspora groups, all overseas Chinese populations have to deal with the concept of being between cultures. As one of the most established diaspora groups, we are fortunate to have an enormous web or resources to draw from. The founding father of the Republic of China himself, after all, was an overseas Chinese, and our rank also includes many influential statesmen and cultural icons in both China and their respective regions. They inspire me. In addition to the stories of our Chinese heritage, our shared heritage also includes the stories of our ancestors’ migrations, the degrees to which we have changed and adapted to the cultures’ of our respective locations. the struggle of settling and succeeding in foreign cultures, and the interlinking web of history that ties all of our communities together.
Most of the overseas Chinese heritage that I mentioned above is not specifically my background. I do not have the Southern Chinese migrant heritage that many of my overseas Chinese friends have, having immigrated more relatively recently. Still yet, as a very porous, yet established identity, the heritage of the overseas Chinese is one I have taken on and come to identify with. In places as far-flung as Hawaii, the Philippines, to Brazil, to Singapore, to London, the overseas Chinese has and continues to inspire me.
