Hello! Welcome to my “introduction” post
So, I know my last post was probably a bit heavy. I want to start with a good post now! Hello! Welcome to my first tumblr blog! I have no idea what I’m doing....
I really like languages and linguistics. I think they can be a lot of fun! One thing I love to do is a little thing I call owlling. What is owlling? Well, that’s a bit more... complicated?
First, where did I come up with that? Well! I got it from a name! On Twitter, there is a man named Avlönskt @thenightavl . That “Avl” part of his name sounds a lot like “owl” to an English-speakers ear. I named what I do after him since he’s a really big inspiration of mine. What does he have to do with anything though?
Ya see, on Twitter, he has this LONG thread where he takes a word (most of the time, a group of words), takes them back to their hypothetical, “original” form, and uses a different language families set of evolutionary changes to make a new “modern” form of the word. Another thing he does, is that he uses the roots a certain word came from, translates their meanings into a different familes (He’s a big Slavic lover, so he usually uses Polish or Russian. Sometimes others), and uses this new “compound” to form the same word in a different family.
All of that is owlling, and I do something really similar! I’ve already wrote a lot, so I’m gonna end it here, but I wanted to give y’all an idea of what I wanna do. Note, I’m not a linguist and I have no credentials or certificates. I’m still a high school student. I just really like playing and messing with different words to see what they look like.
