Truth was; Oakley had been avoiding Oz for almost a week. She’d busied herself with extra shifts, on-calls, volunteer work, and anything else that took her attention away from home. Plus, she didn’t know how to tell him that her partner had left and wasn’t coming back, no matter how badly she wanted her to. Whether she liked it or not, it was a confession she needed to make sooner or later, regardless of how much it hurt.
So, with an apology bottle of booze in one hand, Oakley knocked on his front door and waited for him to answer. When the front door swung open, the blonde stepped closer, almost nervous to be seeing him again. “Before you tell me I don’t have to knock, I need to say something.” She didn’t need him brushing off her flaky behavior, but she knew he wouldn’t hold it against her. “I’ve been avoiding you all week. I’ve been working a lot and volunteering at the shelter because I didn’t know what I was supposed to say. She left, Oz. She left and she’s not coming back and I thought that she would,” she trailed off, feeling her chest tighten and grip on the bottle doing the same. “I’ve spent the last few months putting all of myself into her. I stopped working so much. I stopped seeing you so much. I lost parts of myself that I didn’t even realize I was losing.” It was easy being happy when someone was by your side, but when they left? It felt impossible. “I avoided you because you’re my best friend and I didn’t know how to tell you that I’m sorry. Which is why I brought this,” she offered, handing over the booze with ease. “I know it’s late, but I was hoping I could stay for a little?”
