November 21st, 2008.
Avery was on day 2 of her alcohol and drug binge. This was a normal routine for her. She would be okay during the week, but as soon as 3 o’clock hit on a Friday afternoon, she was taking a hit of a blunt and swigging her drink of choice. This continued until 10 o’clock on a Sunday night. But, with harder drugs and alcohol. It was like she was Hannah Montana, living the best of both of her worlds. She didn’t care who she hurt in the process, she had Adam. That was all she ever needed. The couple had just done another line. Avery had lost count of how many that made for the day. They stumbled their way to the bed, drank some more, made love and fell asleep.. Adam was 6 years older than Avery, but their love and bond was unbreakable. He didn’t care that she was still in high school and had a shitty job as a Sonic carhop. She didn’t care that he slept with other girls during the time they weren’t together. He made her feel good when they were together, so she forgot the other shit. They never fought, which Avery knew was unhealthy, but she thought what they were doing was healthy.
Adam nudged Avery after a few hours. With no words spoken, they crawled out of bed, did the last of the cocaine they had and then agreed they needed some food. Adam grabbed the car keys and Avery followed behind, not even thinking that they clearly weren’t in the right state of mind. The blonde got into the passenger seat as her boyfriend fired up the vehicle and pulled out of the driveway. She didn’t know that this would be the last car ride they ever took together. Avery and Adam met through a mutual friend when she was 15. He thought that was too young for them to be together, so he waited until the night of her 16th birthday to ask her to be his girlfriend. She agreed immediately. They fell in love quickly. Not long after, he introduced her to marijuana. She had been a good kid prior so trying something new gave her a rush. Marijuana soon turned into cocaine, which she would chase with some kind of alcohol afterwards.
The car swerved in between others, Adam didn’t have patience for other drivers, sober or not. In this instance, he was nodding in and out of consciousness, the alcohol was settling on his stomach and that always made him tired. The drugs were running through his system as well, which is the only reason he was still moving about at this point. But, one time he lost consciousness and before Avery could yell to alert him, it was too late. The car collided head on with another and the teenager saw her life flash before her eyes. The vehicle was totaled. All the windows were smashed in, the front unrecognizable. All parties involved unconscious. The next thing Avery remembers is the sound of an ambulance. Her neck was restricted by a brace and her hearing fuzzy. Her voice screaming out her lover’s name. She couldn’t stand the thought of him not being in the same ambulance as her. He always knew just what to say. What seemed like an eternity later, she was being pulled from the ambulance and rushed into surgery to fix her leg which was broken in three places.
6 hours later, Avery was out of surgery and awake. Nobody would give her information on Adam. The police had questioned her and let her know they would be back later. The only thing left to do was call her brother. The one man who was always a constant in her life. She was dreading this moment. With shaky hands and a knot in her throat, she picked up the 1990s phone from her beside table and dialed the only number she knew by heart. When he answered, she almost felt like everything was okay. His voice was warm and welcoming, it always had been. “Coop.” Avery finally said, tears already welling up in her eyes. “I-I was in an accident. I am okay. I have a broken leg and some broken ribs, but I am okay.” her words were quiet, her eyes were wet. “Can you just come here, please?”
