love love love!
My thoughts on Ms. Marvel
I don’t speak on many matters nor do I get angry that often however I refuse to stay silent when someone refers to my race and culture as “baggage.” First let me say that I am very excited that Marvel are going to have a Pakistani Muslim Teenage Super-Hero and that they are having a muslim writer & editor to ensure quality of the writing and correct representation. However my concern is in how you worded what Kamala Khan wishes she was.
“Captain Marvel represents an ideal that Kamala pines for,” Ms. Wilson told NYT. “She’s strong, beautiful and doesn’t have any of the baggage of being Pakistani and ‘different.’”
- Ms. Wilson told NYT
I was happy and fine with everything in that sentence apart from the part from you know, being Pakistani is considered baggage in western culture. It’s insulting. Being Pakistani is not baggage. It is not something negative, it is not something to be ashamed of. It is not the characters fault nor her families fault of being Pakistani. You could have worded it as
“does not have the stigma of being brought up a Pakistani in a western culture,”
“does not have to worry about racism,”
“doesn’t have to worry about being a minority,”
You could have worded it in many different ways, not even having to mention race as if it was an issue for her to be struggling with. Being Pakistani and a Muslim isn’t all she has to offer.
The reason I have gotten very angry at this choice of wording is that I struggled coming to terms with being Pakistani born because of how the Western world viewed us. I do not know how true this is with other Pakistani people but for myself it was a personal struggle that took many hard years to come to terms with and stop hating myself and my family and stop being so angry at everyone. It was not my fault for being a similar race as the terrorists or of the same faith. Growing up in a predominately white area and going to a white school where racism is very common, it did not do well for my self esteem nor love for being born Pakistani. I hated it, I hated the bullying and racism (which funnily enough I still have to deal with very often, you’d think Caucasians would watch what comes out of their own mouths instead of saying something racist and insulting no matter how innocent it was, only difference now is, I point out what they said was very racist in the most awkward and sarcastic way possible,) I hated living in a Pakistani house, I hated being different. That was then, now I love being Pakistani, it’s who I am it’s part of my culture, it’s part of my family and it is a part of my future. I in no way see this as a burden nor baggage.
So please do not use the word baggage to describe our race. Instead of putting that self doubt into the minds of young Pakstani’s that are struggling with their identity you could’ve said something a lot more positive. For example, “She’s strong, beautiful and she knows who she is,”
This should be the ideal Kamala is striving for. Acceptance of herself as a young Pakistani woman. This is what we need in our representation, acceptance of her race, not a hey look we’re doing a comic that features the main heroine as a young Pakistani muslim who is having trouble accepting that she is Pakistani. I can understand her having trouble with accepting she has super powers, but Pakistani? No. She should be proud to be Pakistani like Malala Yousafzai. Sure she will probably get her fair share of bullying, however if she is from a conservative upbringing I’d imagine her going to an all girls muslim school. I’m assuming there is all girls Muslim schools in the US like there is in the UK. Feel free to correct me if I’m mistaken. So long story short, please do not refer to Pakistanis as baggage, even if it was an innocent slip of the tongue. It is still very offensive and you should not refer to any race as having baggage.
I look forward to seeing how you represent a Pakistani household.
From a upset Pakistani.
