Animation I did for the intro and outro of the 2013 Only in Houston Awards. Thanks for the gig, OiH and Acme Fish!
The problem with social conventions is that they have no meaning. When they are broken, there are no obvious consequences other than those of how people think they are supposed to react. It is not a hard and fast rule that the world will follow in the proposed path. Underlying these conventions though, is proof of fundamental shared beliefs. If one is to adhere to these conventions, functioning in society becomes easier, albeit more removed. Adolescence ends when the need to test these boundaries has become a chore of clean up, rather than exhilarating. A life which flows perfectly has fewer poignant moments, and goes exactly as expected.
Is growing up just giving up? Can one lead a functional life without living within accepted conventions? Is a fulfilling life worth a dysfunctional one?
Now let’s examine a world without convention; everyone does what they want, when they want. Hedonism. No one would be dependable without sheer altruism, and I have yet to meet that person. I’ve met a lot of people. I know I’m not that person. I don’t think anyone is.
Are we slowly killing our potential because of the narratives we hold to so dearly? Is there a way for both to survive? Obviously, each person places themselves in their own place on a spectrum, rejects certain beliefs in exchange for others. Some burn it all down.
This is how it looks when earthquakes launch you into space.
