TL;DR: i work at a private school and my kid's parents got mad that i don't care about material things, but about protesters' lives.
I'm gonna post it here since my other social media could be easily tracked back to me in real life, which would have consequences in my day to day life. I am a teacher and i work at a private school. Let's start with that, okay?
Now, as some of you may have seen because of my posts, Colombia is going through a massive hard time right now. Police AND the army are killing civilians, they're censoring social media, and they've left us with no energy and internet to report what's been going on. We've had to resort to lives on Instagram to show people what's really been going on, since the news won't show anything that's happening in the streets.
It's been a week of protests, of young people going out to march against the government, of pacific protests turn violent because of the police, of going out and not knowing if you're gonna come back home, if you're going to die out there. It's been a week of mothers crying for their children, of our cities full of blood in the streets (and i say cities here, because the countryside has had to endure this treatment for over 50 years).
Now. Going back to the school thing. Yesterday, my students (they are 5, 6 and 7 year olds) brought the topic to the classroom, since they live in one of the neighborhoods that was most affected on Monday, in the city that i live in. They were talking about the protesters being vandals, throwing the word around, obviously not knowing what it meant, just repeating what their parents have said. I interrupted and explained that they're not vandals, they're protesters; and that material things could be put back together, but that lives couldn't. As a famous tiktoker said: they did not like this.
Once the class ended (it was a virtual class), some moms called my boss, while i was trying to do that and clear the issue, just in case. Once it was all cleared up, my boss called me and we talked for almost 20 minutes. The problem is that a different mom sent a message to the headmistress, adding in there a serious amount of things that i didn't say, such as:
Apologize for saying that the protesters are vandals (apparently, i said this to a student).
Material things could be put back together because "those people" have money to do so, but people's ideals couldn't (according to her, i did not say anything about people's lives).
Protesters are defending themselves from the police, because they're throwing them tear gas. That's why they're acting that way (i mean, they do. That's true. The police is also killing protesters, but can you imagine explaining what tear gas is to kids that age, and just saying it as a throwaway comment? And them not asking what that was? Sure jan)
This created another big mess in the afternoon, in which i had to talk to my boss again, for another half hour, trying to calm me down again and telling me that she told the headmistress that she had already talked to me about it and that it was no longer an issue.
Now, i know i work at a private school, okay, and i know that these people have businesses that do really well and that've been affected by the protests (and the cops dressed as civilians who are creating the disturbs, but no one is going to say that), but the way they reacted? Not cool. People are literally being murdered by the police and they come here to say that their businesses matter more than the people that work there, or the protesters' lives?
I will not be surprised if i have no oportunity to continue working there once my contract ends (which will be in 2 months).
People in Colombia need help.
