IT’S ALL COMING BACK || ST. BERRY
Tagging: Rachel Berry & Jesse St. James Date: Thursday Night Location: Restaurant and the theater. Notes: Rachel and Jesse have their first date.
Rach Tonight was the night that Rachel was probably going to remember for a while. As she stood in front of her mirror she started curling her hair and telling herself to calm down. She didn't know why she was so nervous, but then again it was like having her first date all over again. Once she was done with her hair and makeup she straightened her black dress before walking into her bedroom and putting on her red heels. It was simple, but classy and she thought she looked good. Taking a deep breath she walked into the kitchen putting everything into her clutch. She didn't know how tonight was going to go and she only hoped that she wouldn't make an idiot out of herself. She was taken out of her thoughts when she heard a knock at the door. "One second," she called out as she fixed her hair real quick and looked in the mirror before walking over to the door and smiling when she opened it. "Hi.." she said with a big smile.
Jesse was beyond nervous about how this night would go. He hadn't been on a date in years. This was definitely out of his element but he had to keep reminding himself that if he wanted Rachel, that he had to show her just how good they could be together. He'd spent over an hour making plans for tonight and now it was finally time to go pick Rachel up. Running his hands down the creases of his black dress pants, he checked himself in the mirror and sighed a bit knowing that he was as ready as he was ever going to be. Deciding that he and Rachel would be taking a cab the rest of the evening, Jesse hailed one down and gave the driver Rachel's address. After a short drive he arrived at her place and let the driver know that he'd be needed again before heading upstairs to knock on Rachel's door. When she opened it his jaw almost dropped and he gulped silently as he took her in. "Wow."
Rach shrugged before letting out a laugh at Jesse's reaction. "Do I look okay?" she asked as she looked at him. She stepped back to let Jesse inside as she went to grab her purse. "Ok, now I'm ready," she said brushing a piece of hair out of her face. After locking her door and shutting it she turned to Jesse and smiled. "So do I get a hint about where we are going?" she asked as they walked downstairs and out to the cab. "You look very handsome by the way," she said with a smile when they finally arrived outside.
Jesse felt his cheeks flush slightly as Rachel laughed at him before asking if she looked okay. "You're kidding right?" He mumbled as she stepped inside and moved to get her purse before declaring that now she was ready and leading him out of her apartment. "Well I hope you're hungry." He declared when she asked for a hint and he led her down to the cab. She complimented him on his looks and he smirked before chuckling. "Well I'm glad to know I can still impress."
Rach "I am hungry," she said with a smile before stepping into the cab. "It looks like you can still impress," she said giving him a smirk. She set her purse in her lap before looking out the window letting out a sigh. She really didn't know where they were going, but she trusted that Jesse would take them to a very nice place if they needed to get all dressed up. She could feel her heart in her ears so she let out a breath in order to get the nerves to leave her body. After a moment she looked over at Jesse and smiled at him before taking his hand.
Jesse smiled when Rachel assured him that she was hungry before rattling off an address to the driver. Rachel was looking out the window and he just stared at her, finding it hard to believe that she was finally here with him. After a moment, she met his gaze and then reached over to take his hand. "I really hope you enjoy tonight." He whispered softly. He wanted this to be the best date she'd ever had because he wanted her to know how special she was.
Rach couldn't help but smile at Jesse's words. "I know I'm going to enjoy it," she said as she squeezed his hand. "It'll be perfect," she said with almost a twinkle in her eye. She had not been treated like this in a while and she certainly hadn't had a fancy date in years. "Thank you for tonight," she smiled as she leaned over and kiss his cheek.
Jesse felt his confidence return a little when Rachel assured him that she was going to enjoy it and that it would be perfect. She thanked him and he bit his lip before replying. "You should probably wait for the night to be over for that." He murmured softly. Still, her lips met his cheek and Jesse sighed softly at the sensation. She was certainly something else. It didn't take long for them to get to the restaurant and he paid the driver before moving to help Rachel out of the car, resting his hand gently on her lower back.
Rach let out a giggle before nodding. "I think you're right," she said with a laugh. When they arrived at the restaurant she looked around in awe. When Jesse helped her out of the car she smiled and thanked him before walking into the restaurant. "This is really nice, Jesse," she said as she looked over at him.
Jesse was having a hard time keeping his head cool with the way Rachel was laughing and giggling. As he helped her out of the car he watched her look around in awe and once they headed inside she commented on how nice it is. "One of the best vegan restaurants in the city." He murmured back, giving the hostess his name before she led them to a fairly private table. He needed this night to go well after everything.
Rach looked over at Jesse and raising her eyebrows when he mentioned it was the best vegan restaurant in the city. "Wow.." she said as she followed him to the hostess. When they were at the table she looked around and smiled at him. "This is perfect, Jesse. It really is," she said as she sat down and looked at the menu.
Jesse "Only the best for you." He replied when she declared that this was perfect. "Pick whatever you want." He added assuring her that he wasn't worried about the cost. Whatever she wanted she could have. It wasn't like he didn't have a steady stream of money coming in and his place was his so he didn't have to worry about anything but taxes and utilities.
Rach looked over at him and smiled. "Really?" she asked as she let out a laugh. "Okay," she looked over the menu before setting it down when she picked what she wanted. "I'm glad you asked me out. I haven't had a guy surprise me like this in a while," she said with a shrug. "What are our plans for after dinner?"
Jesse looked over the menu at the same time as Rachel, trying to decide on what he wanted to eat. She mentioned being happy that he asked her out and then asked about their plans for after dinner. "You'll just have to leave that to me." He declared shaking his head. He wasn't about to let her in on that just yet, not when keeping it a secret was going to be so much better.
Rach made a face at him before shaking her head when he wouldn't tell her. This was what she was missing in her life. She was happy and it was like there was a hole in her heart that was starting to be filled again. "You're like a real life Romeo," she said with a laugh. Once the waitress came over Rachel order first before turning back to Jesse. "So..what's been going on with you. Aside from the show and your mom getting work done."
Jesse fought back a laugh at the face Rachel made at him. She mentioned him being a real life Romeo and he shook his head. "I wouldn't say that." He declared placing his order after hers with the waitress. She asked about his life aside from the show and his mom and he shrugged. "Nothing really. When I'm not working on the show or other things my agent set up, I'm just doing solo vocal practice and dance lessons."
Rach scrunched her nose before letting out a giggle. "Alright, not Romeo," she said as she took a sip of her water. When she listened to him talk she nodded when he mentioned singing. "Sounds very much like me," she said with a shrug setting her glass down. "It's been good to be back in the city though, I've missed it too much." Rachel's mind went to everything that happened in Lima and she let out a sigh remembering how her life seemed to be crashing down in only a few months.
Jesse listened as Rachel mentioned how his life sounded very much like her. She added that she had missed being back in the city. Now that he was living here he couldn't imagine being anywhere else. This was his dream life and he wasn't about to give it up for anything. "There's nothing like this city." He agreed, taking a sip of his water.
Rach "No, there isn't," she said with a smile. She started playing with a piece of her hair before looking over at Jesse. "So is there anything you want to know seeing as we haven't really talked in a while," she asked before letting out a laugh because she didn't really know what to say.
Jesse shrugged when Rachel asked if there was anything that he wanted to know since they had been apart for so long. "Tell me anything you think I need to know." He murmured shaking his head. He'd kept light tabs on her but nothing too serious. He knew about Funny Girl and her stupid tv show but that was about it when it came to her life since he last saw her.
Rach smiled before letting out a laugh. "Ok...well my dads are no longer together. That was a shock. And only made my life last year even more depressing," she said as she shrugged before taking a sip of her water. "I've just been trying to live my life I guess. Nothing too special," she said not wanting to bring up anything else that had happened to her like dating Brody or that pregnancy scare that she completely forgot about and never wanted to think about ever again. "I guess I've learned a lot since I graduated high school," she said sipping her drink before looking at Jesse. "What should I know about you?" she asked looking up at him.
Jesse listened as Rachel told him what he had missed, including her dads separating. That took him by surprise and he just reached his hand across the table to hers, gently rubbing his thumb over the back of her hand. "Learning a lot is part of growing up." He declared. She asked what she should know about him and he shrugged. "There's really not a whole lot to tell. I've been focusing on trying to get my big break and that's about it."
Rach looked at Jesse took her hand. "Yeah, I just didn't think I would be learning so much in a matter of two years, let alone three days," she said giving him a smile. Rachel laughed when he said he was working on his big break. "Well I think that sounds like a pretty good idea and it seems like you've been getting there. The show seems to be coming along."
Jesse "Been there, done that." He declared reaching for his glass again with his free hand. Rachel mentioned that his efforts seemed like a good idea and that he had been getting there. "It is coming along thankfully." He declared smiling. "Just a few more months and we should be performing 6 days a week and living it up." He was more than ready for that chance, and he was starting to hate how long the whole process took.
Rach nodded as she took a sip of her water before seeing the waitress come over with their food. "I can't wait to see it," she said with a smile. "Trust me the feeling of being on that stage is incredible. I am still in shock that it happened," she said after thanking the waitress for their food.
Jesse smiled and thanked the waitress when she brought their meals out for them. "I can't wait to do it. I know there's absolutely nothing like the rush of performing." He couldn't wait for the standing ovations and to be the person that people were looking up to for his abilities. He couldn't wait for the interviews and everything else that would come with fame.
Rach couldn't help but smile at him at how excited he seemed about performing. "I can't wait to see it and you performing," she said as she started to eat. Her mind wandered to the opening night of Funny Girl and her heart was filled with joy knowing how incredible the feeling was. "Wow, this is really good," she said as she ate.
Jesse smiled softly as Rachel mentioned wanting to see it and him. They both dug into their dinners and she commented on how good it was. "Well I'm glad." He declared. He knew that she didn't have too much experience with men spoiling her and keeping track of her dietary preferences, but it was important to him that she knew that he cared and wanted her to have the best experience possible.
Rach smiled over at him before she finished up her plate and pushed it away. "You did good," she said with a small giggle. "This is all very sweet, by the way," she said when she finished off her water. She didn't even know that she would be able to have a date like this again and yet here she was.
Jesse enjoyed hearing that he had done something right when it came to Rachel. She added that this was all sweet and he smiled lifting her hand up to kiss. "Yeah well you bring out the sweeter side of me." He declared finishing off his dinner before flagging the waitress down and ordering them a shared dessert. Of course they had plans after this but they were still fine on time so he really wasn't worried.
Rach blushed when he kissed her hand. "I like that," she said giving him a smile. When he ordered a shared dessert she looked into his eyes before nodding. It was a very sweet and cute gesture that she loved. Once the waitress came over the dessert she smiled and took the spoon and started eating it. "Well you definitely know how to get to a girls heart," she giggled before putting some whipped cream on his nose.
Jesse was grateful that all of Rachel's reactions to his gestures seemed to be positive ones. Their dessert was brought over quickly and Rachel started to eat it declaring that he knew how to get to a girls heart. "The only one I want is yours." He whispered wiping the cream off his nose that Rachel had placed there. It certainly wasn't hard to pay attention and do things that he was sure she would like.
Rach smiled at him as she ate. "And I think you might have it," she said back before setting the spoon down when she was done. She let out a sigh as she leaned on the table. "I would ask what we're doing next, but I have a feeling you aren't going to tell me."
Jesse shivered slightly and had to close his eyes when Rachel declared that he might have it. She leaned on the table and declared that she would ask what they were doing next but that she had a feeling he wouldn't say. "Your feeling is right." He declared smirking and taking another bite of the dessert. It was good despite being vegan and he smiled at her before moving to pay the check since they were both done.
Rach let out a giggle when she saw his reaction. "I don't get a hint?" she asked with a pout even though she knew it wouldn't work. Rachel let out a sigh when Jesse finally paid and she looked at her purse. "So are we ready to go?" she asked with a smile even though she had no idea where they were going.
Jesse "Nope. No hints." He declared paying the bill before slipping his card back in his wallet. She asked if they were ready to go and he nodded, leading her out of the building and hailing a cab once they were outside. Quietly he told the driver the address and then settled back into the seat to relax and do his best to just enjoy tonight without worrying too much.
Rach smiled as she followed him out of the restaurant and into the cab. She settled back into the seat and leaned against Jesse a little as she looked out the window wondering where on earth they were going. "Not even a little hint?" she asked looking up at Jesse.
Jesse "No, not even a little hint." He declared shaking his head. "Have patience Rachel, you said you liked surprises." He really didn't want to tell her until they were there. It wasn't anything major, but he thought it would be fun. It didn't take long for them to pull up to the theater that his show was going to be in and he waved at the security man at the stage door before leading Rachel inside where there was a stereo set up and fairy lights strung around the space.
Rach "I know, but this is killing me," she said with a laugh before she noticed where they were when they pulled up to the theater. She made a face before following Rachel into the theater. "Jesse..." she let out as she looked around at all the lights. "It's beautiful," she said as she looked at him and smiled. She couldn't remember the last time a guy did this for her, but she loved it.
Jesse wasn't going to give into Rachel no matter how much she whined at him. She followed him into the theater and then breathed his name when she saw what he had done. "I thought maybe you'd like to dance with me." He declared moving over to the stereo and turning it on. Theater was something that had brought them together and when he'd had so much trouble trying to figure out where to take her he decided to take advantage of his connections.
Rach watched him turn on the stereo and nodded. "I would love to dance with you," she said with a smile as she stepped closer to Jesse. It was the perfect date and if she could have a date anywhere it would definitely be in a theater. "I have to say this is perfect. I love it."
Jesse got a soft romantic song playing and then moved to pull Rachel into his arms. "Good, I'm glad." He murmured pressing a kiss to her head. This was absolutely amazing and while she was hard to impress he was glad that clearly he had managed to do it tonight. He wanted her to feel spoiled, and even if this wasn't the most expensive date he could have planned, it was focused on her, on them.
Rach wrapped her arms around him and shut her eyes for a moment when he kissed her head. She couldn't have asked for a better date and to be with someone like Jesse. She let her head rest on his shoulder as she listened to the music playing. Rachel smiled to herself before lifting her head and looking at Jesse. "This is the first time in a long time that I've felt special, thank you," she smiled knowing that her eyes were glistening a little with tears.
Jesse just swayed softly with Rachel in his arms, taking advantage of the time he had here with her. She mentioned that this was the first time in awhile that she felt special and as she looked up at him he saw that she was nearly crying. "Hey. None of that." He replied brushing his thumb under her eyes. "No crying on me Berry."
Rach couldn't help but laugh when he told her to not cry. "I'm sorry, it's just really sweet," she said with a chuckle before she took a breath so that she would not start doing an ugly cry. "This is perfect," she said as she looked at him.
Jesse watched as she composed herself in his arms, apologizing. "Does that mean I get a kiss on the first date?" He asked her playing with her hair gently and just tugging her waist a tiny bit closer to his body. She was so addicting that he couldn't help but want to experience everything with her even though he knew that they were going slowly.
Rach made a face before letting out a laugh when he pulled her closer to him. "I think you have earned yourself a kiss on the first date," she said scrunching up her nose a little before giggling. Rachel did not expect anything less from him and he definitely earned a kiss for everything that he put together. "I mean if you don't want one, that's fine," she said trying to keep a straight face.
Jesse couldn't help but smirk when she told him that he had earned one and then giggled. "Definitely want one." He replied, still moving slightly even as he dropped his mouth to hers after tilting her chin up to look at him. It was soft and light but it lit a spark in him and made him sigh softly against her mouth. He really loved kissing her and had missed it a lot.
Rach laughed before wrapping her arms around Jesse again. When he leaned in to kiss her she pulled in a breath before letting it out. Something about this kiss was different than their last one, it was almost like she needed more, but stopped herself from doing anything the two of them would regret. As she kissed him her hand started playing with the hair on the back of his head out of habit. After a few moments she pulled away and smiled at him keeping him close. "Wow.." she said before letting out a laugh. She didn't know what to say and honestly all she really wanted to do was kiss him all night after that.
Jesse almost groaned at the feeling of Rachel's fingers playing with the hair on the back of his neck. It felt so good and he knew that he had to focus on controlling himself because slipping would be far too easy. "Wow is right." He declared rubbing her back before kissing her forehead and pulling away to change the song. He needed that moment of space to help control himself. "Have you ever thought about having sex on a stage?" He asked after a moment. "And I don't mean tonight, just in general."
Rach looked at him with wide eyes at what he said. "No...maybe," she said before laughing. She stood there with her arms crossed with a smirk on her face. "Of course you don't mean tonight, of course not," she laughed as she walked over to him. "Why have you?" she asked raising an eyebrow at him.
Jesse had clearly taken her by surprise with the question and she declared no before correcting that to a maybe before starting to laugh. "Of course I have." He murmured. "I mean come on, the stage is like home to me. I love performing and of course I've thought about having a little fun on a stage sometime." He didn't think it was too odd. After all it wasn't like he meant in front of an audience.
Rach shook her head at what he said. "That sounds plausible," she said with a giggle before she walked over to him and wrapped her arms around him again. "It does sound different, but I'll decline the offer right now," she said as she kissed his cheek.
Jesse licked his lips as Rachel moved close to him and then declared that she would decline the offer right now. "Good, because I wasn't offering right now." He declared turning his head to kiss her lips after she kissed his cheek. "But you know, it's something to think about." He wasn't sure if planting the seed in his head would get him anywhere but if she happened to think about it later, he couldn't complain.
Rach "Ha..I'll think about it," she said rolling her eyes a little. She pecked his lips before moving a piece of hair away from his eyes. "So can we officially call us a thing now?" she asked with a smile as she touched his cheek. "Like I could call you my boyfriend?"
Jesse nodded when she declared that she would think about it and rolled her eyes. A moment later she asked if they could call themselves a thing now, if she could call him her boyfriend. "If you want to." He whispered though this was definitely unfamiliar territory for him. He hadn't been anyone's boyfriend in a long time and he was nervous about it even if there was nothing he wanted more.
Rach "Then I will," she said as she leaned in and kissed him again. Sure she was nervous because she hadn't had a girlfriend title in a while. Hell she didn't even know if what she had with Sam was considered being boyfriend/girlfriend. "I promise I won't screw it up this time," she said when she pulled away from him. "I don't want to screw it up."
Jesse nodded when Rachel declared that she would call them boyfriend/girlfriend. "I don't want to screw it up either. I don't mind the label but we definitely still need to take things slow and not rush them." He declared stealing one more kiss before starting them into a simple waltz as the music changed. There was nothing like being with her like this.
Rach nodded at Jesse's words when he mentioned still taking things slow. "I agree. I don't want to rush anything. We're going to do this the right way with no other distractions," she said as she started to dance again. "Where did you learn how to waltz?" she asked with a giggle when the were moving to the music.
Jesse was glad that Rachel agreed with him about taking things slow. That meant that they were going to do things the right way and that their chances of it working were stronger because they were on the same page from the start. She asked he had learned how to waltz and he raised an eyebrow at her, smirking. "Did you seriously just ask me that?" He asked her shaking his head and chuckling. "A) I'm a St. James, and B) I'm a professional, and that includes knowing every style of dance I can."
Rach made a face when he spoke. "Yes, I did just seriously ask you that," she said with a laugh. When he mentioned being a professional she rolled her eyes a little. "Hey, I haven't gotten that far yet. I'm surprised I even learned the tango at NYADA with how Cassandra July treated me." She laughed as she followed his lead before she started humming to the music.
Jesse spun her around a little as she mentioned that she hadn't gotten that far yet and that she was surprised she had even managed to get the tango with her dance instructor. "The waltz really isn't that complicated." He assured her guiding her through the simple rhythmic step as they moved across the stage floor. "Pretty sure I learned it when I was like 14. I've taken a few lessons lately just to brush up. Though mostly my focus has been on hip hop because of this show."
Rach "I should have taken some lessons," she said with a giggle. "I will say you're very lucky you never had her as an instructor," she said shaking her head at the memories. As she got the memories out of her head she couldn't help but laugh when he spoke about the hip hop he needed to learn for his current show. "Can I say I'm very excited to see you do hip hop," she said teasing him a little. She stopped laughing for a moment trying not to be too mean, but she couldn't help it.
Jesse "One benefit of not being accepted to NYADA." He declared shrugging. Though he was sure that he would have done just fine because he had the drive to make it through anything. She teased him about seeing him do hip hop and he gently wacked her arm before shaking his head. "I do just fine with hip hop." He declared. Of course it had taken some work but when he really got into character it was quite easy to pull off.
Rach "Hey, no hitting!" she giggled before nodding when he mentioned that he was doing fine with hip hop. "Okay, I believe you. I'm impressed because let's face it I don't think I could ever do hip hop." She laughed as she spun herself around before landing back in his arms again.
Jesse rolled his eyes at her before smiling with pride when she said she was impressed. "You'd be amazed what you can pull off when you truly get in character. Jesse St. James may not be a hip hop person but Tino is and when I'm him, it just is completely different." She spun and moved back into his arms and he just squeezed her a little tighter, enjoying having her there.
Rach nodded at his words. "Of course. I have no doubt. Though it wasn't hard for me with Fanny because I've been mimicking the role since I was five," she said bringing back her high school Rachel again. When he squeezed her tighter she giggled before kissing him again. "Should I apologize again for not taking the role?" She asked when she pulled away from him.
Jesse wasn't surprised at all that Rachel hadn't had any problems with Fanny because the character was more like her than she probably realized. She kissed him again and then asked if she should apologize for not taking the role. "No. You did what you felt was best for you and as much as I'd love to have you up here with me, that's what you did and I could never fault you for that."
Rach knew he was right and it took a lot for her to turn down the role, but school was where she needed to do in order to be the best. "Good and if it makes you feel any better it was a very hard decision to turn down the role," she smiled before resting her head on his shoulder to just enjoy being with him. She let out a breath as she seemed to relax in his arms. They were both happy and that's all she wanted was for them to be happy.
Jesse He just nodded when she mentioned that turning down the role had been hard for her. They continued to dance awhile longer and he just continued to play with her hair as they swayed. "Come on. It's getting late. I should get you home." He declared. She might not have school tomorrow but he was sure that she had other things to do and since it was getting late, they should head to her place to say their goodnights.
Rach looked at him when he spoke and nodded. "That sounds like a good idea," she smiled when they stopped dancing. "This night was perfect," she said as she took his hand and headed outside. When a cab was there she got in and told the driver her address before looking over at Jesse and leaning into him a little. As she approached her building she let out a sigh before looking at Jesse. "You want to walk me up?"
Jesse turned the radio off and left everything else in place knowing that the staff would take care of it before rehearsals tomorrow. They hailed a cab and Rachel gave the driver her address. When they got to her building she asked if he would walk her up and he nodded, murmuring to the driver that he would be back in a minute. He definitely wanted to say a proper goodnight after tonight and he also wanted to make sure that she made it safely inside.
Rach smiled taking his hand before leading him up to her apartment. When she reached her door she turned to Jesse and smiled. "Tonight was perfect. Thank you," she said as she leaned in and kissed him.
Jesse "Goodnight Rachel." He replied kissing her back and draping an arm around her waist. "I'm glad you enjoyed tonight." It made him feel good to know that he really could make her happy and that she really did want to be with him. "Now go get some rest. I'm sure you have a billion things to do tomorrow." He declared stealing one more kiss before backing away from the door.
