❉ SHE FELT THIS AGONY for millions of years. When Dorcas Olivia Meadowes walks through the concrete jungle that is London, she can feel the decimation of brittle bones crushing beneath worn tennis shoes.
June 11- a body blackened from blunt force trauma, mangled so badly even gender couldn’t be distinguished was discovered hung upside down in the center of Hyde Park.
June 12- a once happy family made up of three boys, a baby girl, a mother, and a father were found dead in their home, each with the same look of utter consternation warping their frightened, dead features; and the real kicker, the house was locked from the inside.
And now, now it was June the thirteenth and prevention needed to be taken. Seven dead in two days after a two week break of nothing from these sick fucks. To think, she had been planning on backpacking her summer away, but safety was so s c a r c e she would be mad to leave now. It was join the Order of the Phoenix or sit idle, bored and terrified.
It’d been a bizarrely cool summer reaching occasional chills as the sun sank behind the Earth and thus on the overcast, late-afternoon Tuesday in the middle of June, Dorcas wore a light, black windbreaker and long, tight black jeans. She was dressing the part of a Londoner and as she approached Remus John Lupin, sneaking up on him from behind at their designated meeting spot- a nondescript statue of a woman on the West End- she was proud she’d gotten no looks from Muggles for missing a beat in their fascinating fashion trends.
Light feet tread quietly and she waited until she could smell his distinct scent, something outdoorsy, musty yet sweet, before she leaned forward, her rust-colored hair brushing against his strong shoulder.
“Boo,” she said quietly into the shell of his ear. “It feels like fall. I’m in the mood for Halloween.” My birthday. “Sorry, Lupin. Probably totally inappropriate to be in the mood for pretend fear when I should be really afraid. I guess I’m just not expecting much tonight. Hopefully we will be lucky. You ready?” Eighteen years old and with minimal training, Dorcas was ill-prepared for whatever was to come.
It was better to dive in then stand in shallow waters, earning nothing but cold feet.
