I had a really interesting conversation about music and instruments with my coworker the other day regarding the nature of instruments

we were talking about orchestral arrangements and styles of music and, old versus new rhetoric almost

and one thing she said to me was rather interesting, her dislike of the music was because the artists do not use instruments to make music but to use it as a tool of performance as though there was a distinction between the use of an instrument

instruments are tools for music production, tools are used in the making and production of goods or services as one would consider scissors to a hair stylist as a painter to their brush

it is how one uses the tools at their disposal and the result that is often important

there is a certain level of performance for all things, and tools are often required to achieve that performance

whether the performance dictate something elegant and traditionally classical in the ideology of western civilization or

if that tool is used to interrupt the narrative, to bring about a new vision or to create something otherwise not dreamed upon

you can use tools to various degrees of efficiency as you might use a pair of scissors to hammer in a nail

effectiveness aside, it can be done

that is to say such things are possible with music and, while everything is up for interpretation, the act of performance is simply that

coded in the rhetoric of the old and the new and preconceived notions of what is acceptable and what is not the most important thing to gather, however, is that one must be open minded and simultaneously critical of all ideas and ideologies and weigh them on their own set of beliefs

sometimes it simply comes down to the rhetoric of what works best

because you can certainly hammer in a nail with a pair of scissors to a degree of effectiveness but it is certainly a non-traditional way of problem solving that is often overlooked
