She's never afraid to get her hands dirty. Time after time, she dips her fingers into the darkest corners of the souls. Maybe that's why she likes hands so much. Especially the big, strong hands that... Ahem. On the other hand (sorry... I just... it's stronger than me...), it's part of her job to help wraiths maintain the remnants of sanity in this ruthless and insane world. But... Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Headcanon: By the time Dark Souls 3 takes place, Pardoners like Oswald and Cromwell don’t exist anymore. While the profession still existed in the time of Dark Souls 2, Velka’s name had already been forgotten at that point, and the statue in the sewers of the Undead Settlement is one of the last, if not the last that’s still intact. The only reason the Ashen One recognizes it as a statue of Velka is because they were alive in a time when her name was still known, before becoming Unkindled.

Today’s collective noun excerpt -

A Lying of Pardoners Medieval society was dominated by the Church and the Church taught that the ticket into heaven was an unsullied soul. In pursuit of spiritual purity but largely unable to resist the temptation t commit the occasional wrongdoing, the desperate populace turned to ‘pardoners’ to cleanse them of their sins.  Pardoners were usually friars or priests who claimed to be in close contact with the Pope, whom they said gave them the power to grant absolution. For a fee, naturally. Since quality controlling the cleansing of a soul was rather tricky, this profession seemed to attract a large number of fraudsters armed with fake papal pardons and bogus relics.
