Note: I took karate lessons for years, and this was the method we were taught, so it does actually work. Enjoy!
“This is ridiculous, Emma” Regina said, standing on the workout mat opposite her. I don’t need to learn self-defense. I can always use magic.”
“Sure you can, Regina. Just like you did when Whale had you pinned up against the wall. If I hadn’t come, he would’ve strangled you to death” Emma replied sassily, annoyed at the brunette for her insistence on relying on magic.
“That was different” Regina justified. “Magic wasn’t constant then. It is now.”
“And what if your magic still doesn’t work? What if you panic? What if you just freak out and can’t focus?”
“I don’t freak out” Regina stated curtly. That instinct had been stamped out of her early on.
“Uh huh” Emma appeared unconvinced. “And what if you do? You won’t be able to defend yourself.”
“Really, Emma, I don’t see why this is necess-oomph!” Regina cried out as Emma put an arm around her throat from behind. She gagged, trying to catch her breath.
“Come on, Regina, use your magic” Emma said, half taunting her, half hoping she would, so she wouldn’t hurt her.
Regina froze, her eyes going wide and her limbs slack. She lifted her hands, trying to throw Emma off, but was unable to do so. At this realization, she let out a desperate noise.
“Self-defense classes don’t sound like such an awful idea now, do they?” Emma asked smugly.
Regina struggled in her hold, wriggling around and trying to get out.
“That’ll only choke you faster” Emma said knowledgeably. “First thing you have to do is drop your stance. Spread your stance wider and get closer to the ground. It loosens the attacker’s hold and lowers your center of gravity, which makes you more stable.”
Regina complied, and found the arm around her throat loosening a bit. Emma smiled. “Good. Now you want to get rid of the creep trying to choke you. You can do that by flipping him over.”
Regina’s eyes widened again, this time in disbelief. “It’s possible” Emma reassured. “You just have to use your whole body against them. Twist at your waist and try to bring your elbow to the opposite knee. This will produce torque, and if you do it right, flip your attacker over on the ground in front of you, where they’re more vulnerable.”
Unable to process the stream of words Emma had just thrown at her, Regina only heard the first bit and twisted to the left and down, pulling as hard as she could toward her knee and bringing Emma over her head and crashing on the mat.
“Did I hurt you?” Regina asked, shocked, clasping a hand over her mouth.
“No” Emma grinned. “But you did get me off of you, and if you just remember that, you’ll be able to get rid of an attacker too.” Regina held out her hand to pull Emma up.
“Are you still going to make me take self-defense classes?” Regina asked, hoping she’d answer in the negative.
“Oh, you bet I will! Regina, just because you did it once doesn’t mean you’ve mastered it. You need to practice until it’s as second nature to you as magic is” Emma said emphatically. As Regina opened her mouth to protest again, she continued. “And before you say anything, I already checked down at the community center, and they offer classes twice a week.”
“You really do care, don’t you?” Regina asked curiously. It was a strange new feeling for her.
“Of course I do! I can’t just sit here and wait for half of Storybrooke to manhandle you! I have to make sure my girl can defend herself!” Emma answered, smirking.
Her girl. The title felt nice. “Thank you, Emma” Regina gave her the smile that sparkled more in her eyes than it did on her lips.
“You’re welcome. Now let’s practice that again. Don’t think you’re going to get out of practicing that easily.” Emma smiled, and stood behind her again.
Regina readied herself, smiling and finally feeling safe.
