The #COVID19 pandemic has shone a light on the stark inequities of our health systems globally. Through my continued work with @unicef_uk I have seen first hand the failures to protect marginalized communities, especially children, and the progress that can be made when we work together. As #COVID19 continues to disproportionately affect these same exact populations, we are reminded of our responsibility to support each other as one community globally. That is why I am honoured to #PassTheMic to Dr. Vera Songwe @songwevera, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. She is an expert on economics and development in Africa and globally. Today Dr. Songwe is taking over my account to talk about the large scale impact of #COVID19 in Africa and around the world, and why we all need to demand a coordinated global response from our leaders. Do you know what happened in Tulsa? America hid that incident from our newspapers and history books, only recently has it really come to light. The loss of life was enormous , the loss of wealth was equivalent to $3B in damage and economic loss in today’s economy. • 🔂🔂🔂• June 19, 1865 honors the emancipation and independence of black people and the abolition of slavery. • 🩸⛓• in the #redsummer of 1919 (actually 6 months long) white supremacist terrorism, racial riots and massacres took place in more than three dozen cities across the United States. Everybody loves Paul’s Boutique, but my favorite Beastie Boys album is still Check Your Head. I did a phone interview for that album with Ad Rock and Mike D and they were in a dickish mood that day, giving me a hard time about my choice of questions (they’d been answering the same ones all day long apparently) and going off on long, weird stories about buying beats from Arabian taxi drivers and whatnot. Maybe they thought they were being entertaining, but almost none of it was actually usable for an article. Occasionally I got them to answer a question or two about the record, so I had enough to work with, and I still dig their stuff—like this classic round robin of a track.
