Growth in Patent Filings and the Ever Growing Backlog

Here's an interesting little snippet from a recent Associated Press story dated Nov. 14, 2011.

"The World Intellectual Property Organization said Monday the pace of growth since 1970, when fees fetched $2.8 billion, surpasses that of global GDP.

WIPO reported Monday that France, Germany, Japan, Britain and the United States file the most patent requests.

But its report said "the geography of innovation has shifted" as China and other Asian nations spend more on R&D, and patent filings rise by universities in China, Brazil, India and South Africa.

WIPO chief economist Carsten Fink said an "unprecedented growth in patenting" caused a backlog of 5.17 million unprocessed patent applications last year."

Personally, I hope there is some urgency placed on the various patent offices to process this backlog of patents.
