New (and Old) Halloween Decorations

We added a few new decorations this year with the biggest being this spider and web made from foam pipe covers, a garbage bag, and a plastic pumpkin for the body and a soccer ball for the head.  Four reflectors for eyes, some small spiders here and there and a red flood light complete the look.

The coffin I built several years back, but we added the “flame” LED light this year (one of those rotating LEDs that are so popular now) for a new look.  I usually put the fog machine inside the coffin which can be activated with a remote control.

Finally, we added a crow (raven?) this year on top of one of the tombstones we built previously.  The tombstones have weathered nicely even though they are just painted MDF.

Clock Blank

Here is a sample of a clock blank.  This is the Sapele panel I resawed and glued up from a previous post. As you’ll see at the bottom, this has the inlay clock bob blanks.

Stay tuned as I add the clock face, decorate the body, and decorate the bobs.  I plan on making several as gifts, so I will be able to try different wood combinations, textures, and inlay ideas...

Clock “Bob” Blanks

Pictured are several clock bob blanks I created this past weekend.  Shown are cherry, maple, and purpleheart.  The one with the flower is oak and something I made in my inlay class.

These will be spruced up with various inlays and texturing techniques before adding them to the clocks.

Veneer Panels Experiment

This is a panel I created from the resawn cherry I mentioned in my last post. I experimented with making a bookmatched panel by sawing a board in half as well as cutting thin veneers from a board.  This is an example of the latter technique.

As this was the first time I did resawing on my bandsaw, I wanted to see which 

technique would work better for my current project.  

In the first picture above, I created several thin strips of wood by cutting between 1/8″ and 1/16″ from a cherry board.  I glued two of these panels to a piece of plywood to create a bookmatched pattern.

Edging

However, before I could glue them to the face of the plywood, i wanted to create cherry edging from the same wood.  To keep the grain pattern, I cut off about an inch of the wood from the top and bottom of the veneer and glued these to the top and bottom edges so they match the grain of the panel itself.

I did a similar cut from the outside edges of the veneer to create a side edge that also matched the face grain.

Once the edges were in place and trimmed to fit, I glued the face panel to the top of the board.

Bottom Line

While I like the resulting panel, for this particular project, it is a lot more work than just resawing a board in half (thickness-wise) and gluing up the panel as I did with the Sapele panel. Additionally, this project calls for a large hole to be cut into the panel (as can be seen above) and that exposes the plywood substrate.

So after the experiment, while it was a nice practice panel and it turned out better than I thought for my first try, I’ll be resawing the boards in half rather than creating veneers for this project.

Resawn Sapele Panel

Here are two resawn pieces of the Sapele lumber bookmatched and glued up as a panel.  Unfortunately in my resawing practice, I didn’t get quite to the middle of the board.  After planing to equal thickness, it’s a bit thinner than the 1/2″ thickness I was hoping for.

However, it turned out really nice and I think I’m on the right track with cutting a board in half to make the bookmatched panel.  Ultimately, I need these panels for a batch of Christmas presents, so I’m debating between this technique and veneering thin slices to a plywood base (I’ll post about that “experiment” next).

I have one more Sapele board (the other half of this one) to try again.  But first I need to build a resaw fence as the stock fence on my bandsaw is too short to get a good consistent cut. #itsalwaysomething

I will say that the new Timberwolf resaw blade went through the Cherry and Sapele like butter!  Very happy...

Charging Station Complete!

The charging station is complete! You can see it in the smaller pictures how the USB charger and cords were put into the inside of the Charging Station and the cords coming out the side for the tablets and the front for the phones. 

Stained with blue stain and then finished with three coats of polyurethane for protection.
