Digital sampling and decontextualization is a common method used throughout contemporary media and art. The internet has provided users and artists with the means to borrow works, music, and media from any point on the timeline of recorded human history. This practice of “mash-up” culture is a way to create an ambiguous time and place within the work. I tried to create a space that blurs the lines between past, present, and future is a way to dislocate the audience and allow them to immerse themselves into a place that reflects the past, present, and future technologies. I used the painting “Saint Jerome Writing” (1605) because it depicts the cardinal of the time feverishly writing and translating as death (the skull) looks upon him. I edited the image to include him holding a cellphone in front of a computer to reflect the ongoing endeavor to document and pass down knowledge. I think our time in history will provide a warped view of how we use the past and present to represent our media and nostalgia.
