I feel like Pearl Nygaard doesn't get the love she deserves. She was basically the only one keeping Lester grounded all those years. His brother said he's always had mental health issues. And I don't think it was Pearl's nagging that flipped his crazy switch. It was Malvo.
I have some questions about Pearl Nygaard.
These are mainly questions that I asked myself before, but now that we've jumped a year later and clearly Lester has moved on, they've popped back up again.
My main question is Did Pearl ever love Lester?
They way she treated Lester and the horrible things she said to him just before he killed her almost makes me want to say no. But then I have to realize a few things:
1. Despite what her mother and possibly her friends said, Pearl married Lester - her mother felt he was a loser, and Pearl may have been the kind of girl who could have gotten any guy she wanted back in the day. But she not only chose Lester, she stayed married to him for 18 years.
2. She went and had sexy pictures taken for herself - Now that could have been for herself, or that could have been for someone she was having an affair with if she were having one, but Lester knew where they were. That makes me think she got them for Lester (could be wrong).
So then I start to wonder when did she fall out of love with him, if she did at all?
Did she look around and see everyone progressing in life while she and Lester stayed stagnant, broken, and outdated, which made her bitter?
Were the motivational posters and phrases posted around the house her doing or Lester's? I had a thought that maybe this was Pearl's attempt at motivating Lester to become a better salesman, but when it didn't seem to happen, she became more bitter, frustrated and therefore abusive.
What the HELL does she mean when she says Lester can't even face her when they're having sex? I've been trying to wrap my brain around that one. It's hard to think she means that physically since as Lester pointed out, she's not facing him. Is she talking about Lester's confidence issues? But then that makes me think she was belittling and cruel even then if he can't bring himself to "face" her after 18 years of sleeping together.
Again I realize that for the most part Pearl is one of the "villains" on the show since she was abusive to Lester. But she's one of those characters I wish we knew just a little more about, even if that meant a few more flashbacks.
The House on Willow Creek Drive
The house, it creaks,
It groans, it leaks,
Its the house that no one will buy,
Because she's there,
With blood in her hair,
With a guttural moan and a sigh.
In the darkness below,
You will see a strange glow,
That will haunt you, assault you, and pester,
As you turn to see,
She stands still as a tree,
And she quietly whispers "Lester..."
Fargo Thoughts:
Pearl isn't necessarily a bad person. She's not very nice granted but I think thats partly because life didn't turn out how she planned.
What we know about her is that she and Lester have been dating since High school. She may or may not have cheater on Lester with Sam (Sam could have just said that to upset Lester). She loves inspirational quotes and filled her home with them. She had no children.
At some point I think she regretted getting married to Lester. Perhaps because she changed or because she wanted more from life. It could be because he stayed the quiet guy who got bossed around and never got a promotion at work. Maybe she thought he would grow out of it. Maybe she feel out of love.
At some point she became unhappy and she started picking on her husband. Little thing, comments about how he looked or saying he couldn't do things. These things built up and suddenly thats all there relationship was. Without realizing it Pearl shared her pain.
This is not an excuse for Lester to kill her. But it's a fairly common story. We see couples where one of them (someones it a woman and sometimes it a man) picks and picks making rude comments about the other one and finally the one being picked on snaps. Which is what I saw happen to Lester, a moment where everything got to be too much in his head and he did the wrong thing.
I think the fact that Lester hears Pearls voice when he's in their house points to the fact that he misses her and that he feels bad about what happened. I don't want this to be taken as me saying it is ok to kill your spouse if there rude to you because thats not what I feel at all.
What i want to say is I don't think Lester is pure evil but I also don't think Pearl was asking to be killed by being 'rude' to him. What should have really happened was a divorce but that boat has sailed.
If anyone could shoot theirselves in the face with an unloaded firearm, it's you.
