There are between 17 and 20 species of penguins recognized (depending on who you ask, ahhhh yes the controversy that is taxonomy). Some of the characteristics of penguins include their lack flight, their wings that have been modified to act as flippers, countershaded coloration, a thick layer of insulating feathers, and of course a ridiculously adorable waddle on land! In fact, this adorable waddle raises the penguins center of mass as the walk, making it easier for them to walk despite their short legs and large feet.
