5th Summer Session, Upper Textiles in Lilly Loom, Penland School of Crafts: Improvisational accidental geometric piecing as explained by LUKE Haynes. Process begins with a shopping trip to a Thrift Store. Collect fabrics with multiple textures in lights, darks and an accent. Collect a wide range of materials, bed sheets, jeans, dresses including prom, shirts, tablecloths etc. Wash all garments in hot water. Dry. Cut up garments. Cut strips of cloth in irregular curvy line shapes from a light and dark contrasting fabric. Don’t sort or organize strips. Place strips in a 5-gallon bucket, mix up, randomly pull out strips and sew them together. Press from the top. Cut the created fabric three times and sew the four sections together in a different order. Press from the top. Repeat the process this time adding a bling accent color in small amounts. Continue the cut, mix-up and sew fabric process three or more times. Press from the top. Now use the created fabric in a quilt pattern. You should have an accidental geometric pieced quilt top.
