Gawain drifted back towards his siblings. He thought the four of them were like magnets, today most of all — sometimes repelling one another, sometimes inexplicably pulled together, as if drawn in by the same star. This was more like a black hole: just as powerful, but a gap in the fabric of their universe. “Are we ready?” All of a sudden he wondered who would...carry her, their mother’s ashes. The moment the thought came to him, he said, “I can hold the—” He waved a hand vaguely, knowing they would understand what he meant. He felt ill, despite the warm summer air and his nearly empty stomach.
