Today I learned that the Ingenuity mini-helicopter that's docked with the Perseverance rover on Mars has a postage stamp sized piece of fabric from the Wright Flyer attached to it.

Also, the touchdown site in Jezero Crater has been dubbed Octavia E. Butler Landing after the late multiple Hugo and Nebula Award-winning science fiction author.

Up up and away !

Ingenuity makes history today by being the first to successfully carry out powered flight on another planet.

The small drone was carried under the belly of the Nasa Perseverance rover, and detached and placed on the ground a few days ago to ensure it could handle the extreme conditions on the surface before starting it's first flight.

It's first flight was a simple manoeuvre, just 10ft for 30 seconds, before returning to the ground.

The Martian atmosphere is 1/100th less dense that it is on Earth, so the blades were made to cycle 2,500 times a minute to compensate. However, there's no test like the real thing, so this will allow the scientists back home to analyse exactly how the drone responded to the conditions and plan for more interesting assignments in the near future.
