The Pervert's Guide To Ideology (2012) - 19/05/2014
I am already eating.
TV. 1st Time.
Obey. The real message beneath.
Strangely mesmerising. Difficult, and requiring concentration. Up untill the point that it seems to loose track of it's own point and becomes a ramble. Such a drop off can only follow such an interesting begining.
A journey through cinema on a route of specific choice.
A complex thought exercise that other than being an occasional chalenge and a regular frustration hasn't gotten me anywhere.
A dream haunting us.

List of films discussed in The Pervert's Guide to Ideology
The Pervert's Guide to Ideology List of Films Discussed.
Opening in the UK in October, US in November. For full Zizekian effect, you'll want to watch the following films prior to seeing The Pervert's Guide to Ideology. For each film I've listed the best online sources I can find. When a film isn't available for inexpensive online rental, I've discussed the fact that some people might download an illegal copy. You of course should not do this. So be sure not to visit The Pirate Bay and search for the text listed.
Triumph of the Will (1935). The famous Leni Riefenstahl propaganda film. Available on YouTube
The Eternal Jew (1940). Another Nazi propaganda film, this was a pet project of Joseph Goebbels and directed by Fritz Hippler. Available on YouTube
Brief Encounter (1945). Based on a play by Noel Coward, Brief Encounter deals with passionate love as bounded by social expectations.
Available to download from The Criterion Collection ($16).
Scofflaws might search The Pirate Bay for "Brief Encounter (1945)[DVDRip][big_dad_e]"
The Fall of Berlin (1950). A 1950 Soviet film generally seen as an artifact of Stalin's cult of personality. Film is in two parts. Available on YouTube without subtitles (Part 1 | Part 2).
DVD available from Amazon ($25) I can't find a legal online source for a subtitled version.
Scofflaws might search The Pirate Bay for "The Fall Of Berlin (Padeniye Berlina)"
The Searchers (1956). Classic American Western starring John Wayne and directed by John Ford.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($3).
West Side Story (1961). Classic Hollywood musical directed by Robert Wise and to a lesser extent by Jerome Robbins. Sort of a reworking of Romeo and Juliet.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($3).
The Sound of Music (1965). The Julie Andrews musical your mother watched every time it was on TV. Can't find a legal online copy for less that $10.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($10)
Scofflaws might search The Pirate Bay for "The Sound of Music (1965) (Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer)."
Loves of a Blonde (1965). Interesting choice. This is a 1965 film by Milos Forman. Not sure what he'll say about this one, but my guess is it will have to do with the Lacanian concept of gender differences in desire related to sexual love.
Can't find a legal online version of this.
DVD is $24 Criterion Collection.
Scofflaws might search The Pirate Bay for "Loves of a Blonde (1965) Milos Forman."
Seconds (1966). Excellent 1966 John Frankenheimer film starring Rock Hudson. Here's an interesting article about it's recent Blu-Ray release.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($3)
The Firemen's Ball (1967). Another Milos Foreman film, The Firemen's Ball was seen as a satire of communism when released in 1967 in Czechoslovakia. It was banned by the Soviets following the 1968 invasion.
DVD available from The Criterion Collection.
Cannot find it legally online.
Scofflaws might search The Pirate Bay for "Milos FORMAN - The Firemen's Ball (1967) CRITERION."
if....(1969). Malcolm McDowell stars in this 1968 Lindsay Anderson revenge fantasy set in an English boarding school.
DVD available from The Criterion Collection
Scofflaws might search The Pirate Bay for "If.... (1968) Criterion BDRip 720p AAC multisub HighCode."
MASH (1970). The Robert Altman classic from 1970.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($3).
Zabriskie Point (1970). Interesting choice; not sure what Zizek will say about this one. Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni's 1970 follow-up to his earlier Blow-Up, this one is set against a backdrop of student agitation in late '60's southern California. Culminates in a surreal scene in Death Valley's Zabriskie Point, an area of stark, lifeless beauty.
Available on YouTube, but cannot find a high-res streaming version. Scofflaws might search The Pirate Bay for "Zabriskie Point (Antonioni 1970)" and find a good quality copy.
Cabaret (1972). Bob Fosse's musical set in the final days of the Weimar Republic, starring Liza Minelli, Michael York, and Joel Grey.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($3).
A Clockwork Orange (1971). The Stanley Kubrick dystopian classic based on the Anthony Burgess novel.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($3).
Jaws (1975). I was scared to go in the ocean for years after seeing this as a child.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($3)
Taxi Driver (1976). The Martin Scorsese classic set in a decaying New York of 1976.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($8)
Brazil (1985). Terry Gilliam's dystopian fantasy set in an Orwellian universe (if we replace Big Brother with a demented PeeWee Herman).
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($4)
Full Metal Jacket (1987). Stanley Kubrick's exploration of Vietnam, and the intersection of an M-14 and the human brain.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($3, or Amazon Prime)
The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). Martin Scorsese's depiction of Jesus' struggles with temptation. Was controversial as it pushes the envelope on the Jesus-as-man theme. Stars Willem Dafoe as Jesus.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($3)
They Live (1988). Not the greatest film in the list, but I can see where Zizek might go with it. Directed by John Carpenter and starring professional wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper. In a nutshell, Piper's character discovers that society is controlled by aliens who secretly slip totalitarian messages into mass media.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($3)
Titanic (1997). The James Cameron mega-budget blockbuster.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($3)
I Am Legend (2007). Based on the 1954 novel, as was the Charlton Heston classic The Omega Man.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($2)
The Dark Knight (2008). Christopher Nolan's Batman vs, The Joker saga. My favorite of all the Batman movies.
Available on Amazon Instant Video ($2)
