In Sugar,We’re Going Down by Fall Out Boy

there’s that line “ I’m just a notch in your bed post, but you’re just a line in a song” and that particular phrase has always haunted me. while everyone i knew saw it as Pete bragging about his popular hits to her I always thought this particular line was the most desperate not the least... 

when he says "I'm just a notch in your bed post" He's denoting himself to be a whim of hers, and the entire song has such a desperate tone to it i think even when he says "and you're just a line in a song" he means to be sarcastic/cynical. How can someone JUST BE A LINE IN A SONG? the line at first makes you think that writing a song about someone isn't important but PETE NEVER WROTE ABOUT SOMEONE/SOMETHING THAT WASN'T IMPORTANT. EVER. so by "just a line in a song" i guess he was trying to hide his sorrow, she touched him enough that he wanted to write a song about her, a song that turned out to be their biggest hit at the time. that particular line means she's important not the opposite. She effected him hard enough that after years of her he still wrote a song about their relationship and the longing to it.
