If you want to hear a brilliant, heartbreaking, and cathartic album listen to Pete Miser’s newest joint Depression Era Thinking. This Brooklyn-based by way of Portland, OR is no stranger to the road. As a kid he criss-crossed the country too many times to count leading his live funk / hip-hop band The 5 Fingers of Funk. After moving to NYC he became the DJ for global touring artist Dido while all the while continuing to make his own records. His newest was backed by hundreds of friends and family members on Kickstarter and in it, Pete processes the death of his mom on “Mom Speaks” he plays a tape from his mom from when he was in 2nd grade. ”It Comes In Waves” is about the suicide of 2 of his brothers and ”Moments Like This” asks if you remember where you were on September 11th, 2001 plus he shares some other real-life moments. It was very hard not to sob when I heard it at first and a friend called and said he was crying so hard he had to pull over on the road while driving home. Yeah, it’s that deep. Pete is a genius, and in this gorgeous, mellow record he has the courage to strip himself bare and the result makes for a message that leaves you feeling hopeful and Pete reminds us to stay grateful and stay positive “Bright Side” but keep your tissues handy while you listen.
