Wood Engraving Wednesday
PETER BARKER-MILL
Peter Barker-Mill (1908-1994) was a painter, engraver, and patron of the arts and contemporary crafts. He was commissioned by Christopher Sanford, the third owner of the Golden Cockerel Press, to produce wood engravings for Golden Cockerel publications beginning in 1937. The engravings shown here are among the first to be made for the commission, the first for Bligh's Voyage in the Resource, with 6 engravings by Barker-Mill, published in May 1937, the next for The First Fleet, issued to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first settlement in Australia at Botany Bay, with 5 engravings by Barker-Mill published August 1937.
Barker-Mill was an artist of some means to be able support the arts and crafts over his lifetime, and after his death his children and grand children established the Barker-Mill Foundation in his memory to support local charities, schools, organizations, and individuals in south west Hampshire.
These images are reproduced in the Golden Cockerel Press 1936-1943 bibliography, Pertelote, A Sequel to Chanticleer, printed in London by the Press’s co-owners at the time, Christopher Sandford and Owen Rutter, and our copy is another donation from our late friend Jerry Buff (1931-2025).
