Claude Ferny  Maître Leduc...Tueur !

Claude Ferny was a pen-name of Pierre Marchand who also signed Peter Marsh. Ferny was a case. The man wrote much, very much, maybe too much. He introduced his novels with quotes of celebrities (like Doctor Locard, the famous french criminalist), eulogistical notices  that he wrote himself most of the time. Though fallen in oblivion, or underrated, he was a main author of the french 50′s crime/detective novel. Reading his books is an experience in itself - you will pass by many state of minds, from sheer enthusiasm to drowsiness...

To make it short: Ferny was on the edge of literary madness, maybe on the edge of real madness.

While some electronic musicians seem to struggle heavily outside their introductory eras, some achieve their biggest successes, when they move beyond them. A good case of the latter might be Vangelis. He did debut during the 70's, yet the majority of his greatest hits comes from the 80's. Still, one must admit his inauguration for that decade, See You Later, baffles us. I agree, calling the disc his most experimental one might be too much, Beaubourg would like a word with you about this, though the LP does contain a fascinating paradox. On the one hand you recognize the Vangelis, which conquered the movie world with his soundscapes in the period, but on the other he also uses some elements he abandoned later on. Sadly, I might add, because they give something intriguing to his tone.

While our eyes are looking through the details of this constantly moving, transforming scenery, we enter into a state similar to when we are thinking about something half asleep but cannot recall what it was once we are awake. A dream-like presence in which even an English folk song is welcomed and can sound immensely recent. To round the year up.

Well it has been a good year musically. I’ve had the good fortune to work with some of the most open minded and adventurous people I could ever have asked to make a racket with. Beresford Hammond has had a great year, we’ve played some wonderful spaces both here and abroad. Easy Jet even managed to NOT break my guitar in the hold, mainly thanks to the good folks at Hiscox. We have crowned the pukka year with ‘The Science of Snow’ being mentioned in the best of 2015 on AP Reviews our little record is sitting there proud amongst some great names.

Myself and Sonia were joined by Carolyn Hume and Judie Tzuke this year to make some recordings which was a great experience and will be explored further. We will be making a trio record with Carolyn early in the new year also. More on that as and when. Below is a film I made to go alongside a piece by Beresford Hammond Hume Tzuke.

The Crystal Moth project featuring all of Fourth Page and Patrick Dawes, plus Duke Garwood, Chris Cornetto, Nina Abadzis, James Burnham, and Jon Clayton. Is ready to be unleashed on the world next year see below for a taster. More as and when on that also.

Last but not least, the outreach work with Camilla Saunders and the Radnor Improvisers has been taken to the next level this year. It has been truly awe inspiring to see how improvised music can help people whose means of communicating has been limited through illness. The sessions we have had the honour to be part of this year (see ‘Notes from the front’ blog for details) have really highlighted the true power of music for all of us who took part. Camilla and I are in the process of writing a report on the findings of the group which we will publish next year. This work will carry on next year and we hope to see it grow from strength to strength.

So it it just leaves me to say, Happy Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone. In all that is going on in the world lets hope we can all learn to be a little kinder to each other.....
