I tried to learn Arabic for a short period of time. And when we were asked to introduce ourselves and what we do, I didn't know what's the term for photographer. And my teacher said, you're a مصورة (musawwirah). And I realised after that it came from one of God's names. Al-Musawwir. The Fashioner, The Shaper of Beauty. [Someone] explained to me that the structure of Islam is like a house but that you need to have a spiritual heart at the center of that house. Tasawuf was that spiritual heart, he said. If you take it out of the house, you don’t have the protection, but if you only keep the outer shell, you lose the real spirit. That analogy made sense to me. So I took some sort of a ‘leap of faith’ and felt that Islam was the right path for me
