They have a cantilevered dining room table that goes from inside the house to outside. Inside, you’re sitting on some rustic old wood chairs. Outside, some pretty awesome Walter Lamb chairs. There’s great furniture everywhere, along with little snippets of art. The petroglyph tiles that wrap the door headers shows up in a few spots on the lanai floor. And greeting you at the front door is a “sacred heart of Jesus” mural done by Charlot. But the materials really make this house special. The red brick floors move inside and out, giving it the feeling of a Mexican courtyard house. And best of all, one wall of the house is clad in hapuu fern roots. Just because. . Had the pleasure to start my morning last week Friday at one the most incredible houses on Oahu. Artist Jean Charlot’s house that he designed with friend, architect George “Pete” Wimberly, on a hidden piece of land in Kahala. Charlot’s son was on the phone at our meeting and mentioned that he considers the house his father’s largest piece of art. Charlot, who was know for his murals and paintings, collaborated with many different artists to create ceramics, sculptures, tiles, and bronze works. Here, above his living room, is a fresco he made with another friend, Juliette May Fraser, titled “Tropical Foliage.” . Because both Charlot and Wimberly were both influenced by different cultures in their work, you can see elements of the house represent them. Elements of the house speak of Charlot’s Mexican roots with the rustic qualities. There’s ties to French Polynesia in some of the artwork and forms of the house. The cantilevered stairs seem very Wimberly, but the rustic ladder and curved plaster walls seem to evoke more of a Charlot vibe. .
