Today on OldMotors.net … The 604 was Peugeot’s first “executive car,” and the first time it in 40 years that it had fielded a large car at all. The postwar years in France (1945-75), later defined as Les Trente Glorieuses (“the glorious thirty”), were ones of explosive economic growth. France’s tax laws had kneecapped Bugattis and Facel-Vegas, but French buyers still wanted luxury cars. Peugeot’s 504 was an almost perfect opposite number for the Mercedes W114, but Mercedes had cars to trade up to, Peugeot didn’t. So in 1970, Sochaux began developing its own “Executive car,” which became the 1975-85 #Peugeot604. It consistently got good reviews over a nearly ten-year run, but ended up an also-ran. The 604’s story is one of compromise. Since it was aimed at a narrow band of the market (luxurious, but nothing above 2.8L) in France but had to be global, Peugeot used the 504 platform as a basis for the car - including the front doors, bulkhead, floorpan, and suspension. That gave the 604 an excellent soft ride with capable handling, and a wheelbase stretch produced a huge and comfy car. Power at first came from the PRV V6, early versions of which weren’t all that powerful or reliable (though eventually it turned into a turbo powerhouse). The styling was by Pininfarina’s Aldo Brovarone, who also had a strong hand in the 504 and 504 coupe. The euro 604 found itself uncomfortably sandwiched between top-spec Fords and Opels and bottom-rung Mercs, and never really took off with buyers despite many good reviews. It’s 16-mpg thirst had something to do with that. In America, where Peugeot was the self-styled “French Mercedes,” the car was a natural fit for the lineup, but the addition of federal lights and bumpers was not a happy one and Peugeot’s small dealer network and the car’s unconventional nature (for a pricey luxury car in the era of opera windows) meant it never found many buyers. In 1979, Peugeot added an Indénor Turbodiesel, the first Turbodiesel car on sale in Europe and a counter to M-B’s American 300SD. The Diesel reinvigorated the 604 to some degree, but it was never a hot seller. Stateside, the Diesel replaced the V6 altogether after 1981.
