Ever since she was a young child, the burned-out Pokemon Mansion had been one of Quinn's favourite places to visit whenever she was staying with her grandparents. For as long as she could remember, the building had been decrepit, creaking eerily with every strong gust of wind. Her mother had warned her several times not to go in, because one day it was likely to collapse. But considering how Quinn had never heeded those warnings back then, she was hardly about to start now.
Her footsteps echoed in the large entrance hall, occasionally scuffing on the damaged marble. Rosalind stretched in her arms and Scout brushed up in between her legs from time to time, reminding her that unlike the days where she'd been Lucy, she wasn't there alone for once.
"You know...sometimes I used to dream about buying this land and building a home on it. The only reason nobody's done it so far is because building permits are hard to come by here, but nobody has said no to the bulldog yet." She jokingly told the two Pokemon.
Right...joking. It wasn't really considered joking when she had sketches in her notepad of what each floor would consist of. And it especially wasn't considered joking when she had a clear image of what her new home would look like every time she glanced around the empty shell of a building that stood before her.
And now that Russell was dead and she stood to earn a great deal of money. More than she needed to buy the plot, but maybe not quite enough to complete the crazy project she had in mind. But that was all part of the fun. Besides, if she actually managed to become the Indigo and Johto league champion, she'd have more money than she'd know what to do with and that was all the motivation she needed.
Hugging Rosalind closer to her, Quinn spun the Axew around as she gave her Pokemon the grand tour of the house, telling them her plans for each room, her words painting a spectacularly picture.
Every so often they would come across a Pokemon, usually something pretty ordinary like a Koffing or Rattata, before the Pokemon would scurry off. They served as temporary distractions from her story, which she told with a skip in her step and a smile on her face.
That was, she'd started the story with a smile on her face, but as they entered each room, the smile slowly slipped from her face. Because each room that had once been her unique vision for how she'd live with her Pokemon, now contained the barest traces of another person. The shadow of a person who would never even live in it. Quinn had planned to put her own personal stamp on every room in the house, but as she told her Pokemon her ideas, she found that Rachel had managed to worm herself into every single plan. If it wasn't the 2nd floor study that had now become a music room, then it was the practice gym she planned to set up to the side of the house, that also had co-ordinator facilities.
Her dream house had gradually become their dream house and Quinn watched in horror as the carefully crafted illusion shattered around her. She was building a house for a woman that didn’t love her. A woman that couldn’t love her. A woman that would never love her.
It was only when Rosalind started to cling to her chest and squirm violently that Quinn was clued into the fact that she’d started crying. Scout’s affectionate brushing had become increasingly more forceful and Quinn could only look down at her two Pokemon, through a haze of unshed tears, and smile weakly.
“I’m okay guys. Really...I’m practically halfway to being over her.” She insisted, sinking down against the wall to sit with them both. The floorboards groaned beneath her, but held as she gratefully accepted the hugs her Pokemon were giving her. They of course didn’t believe her, because well...they weren’t stupid, but Quinn still felt the need to insist that she was fine, if not for them, then maybe for herself. “I mean really. Rachel, who?” She added softly.
They sat like that for hours, watching the colours of the walls shift playfully as the sun started to set. To take her mind off of the house, she told them the stories her mother had once told her, and of all the happy memories she had from her time on the island. Quinn told them about all the times she’d gotten into trouble for exploring the Island, and coming home late and filthy. And the time she’d come home soaking wet in her Sunday best, because she’d thought that going for a swim in the ocean was preferable to a long dinner with her grandparents.
By the time she felt okay to leave the room, it was dark in the mansion, save for the soft glow given off by Scout. Feeling ready to go home, Quinn started to carefully move to the main staircase, but stopped when Scout started going the opposite way.
“No Scout...that’s not...” But the little Vulpix had already wandered off into another room and all Quinn could do was follow.
Her breath caught in her throat as she stared into one of the few rooms they hadn’t made it to earlier. Of all the rooms in the house, it was her favorite. It was the one that had seemingly avoided damage when the fire had made its way through the house and for that reason Quinn had often found herself there when she came to the house. The wall to her left was covered in her drawings; a mural of all the most important things to have ever happened in her life spanned every inch of the off-white wall.
Her fingers ghosted over the drawings, most of them rough and childlike. They skimmed over clouds and various Pokemon to stop over a shooting star that was being wished on by a tiny version of herself. “The stars are metaphors, and metaphors are important.” Quinn whispered, a small smile spreading across her features. She’d get over this one day, but until then, all she could do was make the most of the distance between herself and Rachel.
Scout let out a little bark, breaking Quinn out of her thoughts. Gracefully she made her way over to the Vulpix and received her second surprise of the night. A pale Pokemon egg, with a flare of red across it, was nestled in the corner of the room. Quinn stared at it blankly for a moment, before starting to giggle. Of all the places to find the egg, it had to be the room that was labelled in her plans as ‘the nursery’.
Scooping it carefully in her arms, she decided to take it home with her. Regardless of if she kept it or not, this was no place for a baby Pokemon.
At least not yet.
