Couches and Trains
I couldn't find the remote. I wanted to watch TV and searched high and low for it. Finally I went to the couch, reached into the cushion and felt a cold metallic disc. Not the remote, but a quarter. I looked down and saw this beautiful little guy:
The Utah quarter pays homage to the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad, more specifically the final "Golden Spike," that was nailed in on May 10th, 1869 in Promontory, Utah. Unfortunately the spike on the quarter is not gold, which would have been really cool. Regardless, the story behind the First Transcontinental Railroad is pretty awesome. There are smaller stories about guys who survived spikes being nailed into their head, but that image would be a little too graphic, though maybe not. Building of the railroad began in 1863, in the middle of the Civil War. That alone exemplifies America's greatness. In the middle of our nation's biggest internal conflict, the government decided to undertake one of the biggest developmental projects in the nation's history. In the middle of splitting up, America was also working on bringing everyone closer. This quarter should serve as a reminder that great things can be achieved when working together, even if both sides hate each other- I'm talking to you congress. Kudos to you, Utah, for reminding of this totally awesome, oft overlooked moment in American History.
