Since there's not much info about her my headcanons are that she was Apollo's first child ever and he created a position of Pythia just so his daughter would be the most important women in the world.
I would like to ask you somethings about Apollo... I'm working in a project with him, and i'm using only ancient greek and roman texts... I'm still debating if i must use Dionysiaca, because is a bit late lol, but is interesting
Okey, my asks... I've been reading some things in Robert Graves' Greek Myths that i couldn't find in any ancient source and maybe you know more about.
First one is Daphne being an ancient goddess (and her story is similar to the Hyacinthus' one, a pre-hellenic god that merged into the cult of the new one). Is that true? I couldn't find anything... Besides we know that laurel were sacred to Apollo before her story.
Second... The Thamyris' punishment by the Muses was Apollo's fault, because he was an admirer of Hyacinthus. Apollo heared him boast that he was better than the Muses and he goes with them to tell it (in a evil plan to get rid of him), but i couldn't find anything too, in all the ancient sources, Apollo is not involved in that.
And the other... Apollo learned about mesure after his servitude with Admetus, and was then when he begin to spread the Delphic Maxims: Know Thyself and Nothing in Excess. Is that true?
Thank you <3
hiya anon!!!! I know the struggle of researching mythology for a project so I’ll do my best to point you in the right direction!!
I’m going to have to preface this first though with I’m not too sure with at least two of these, so I’ll ring up some friends at the end for their input!
Daphne
I’m not personally aware of Daphne being a pre-Hellenic deity like Hyacinthus was 🤔 everything I’ve read up about her origins and history connects her directly to Apollo, and like you said anon, the laurel itself was sacred to Apollo before her existence (I discussed this in my Lovers post as well as my own essay on Apollo’s origins, where I reveal that the laurel was also sacred to Aplu, Apollo’s Etruscan-Italian forebearer).
To be fair though, we do lack a LOT of information on her and her origins because her earliest creator, Phylarchus’s work, has been lost to history. It could be possible Robert Graves found a rare source for this, though I would advise that unless he cites a source (and it holds up! Sometimes modern writers can be finicky with that sigh), or one eventually turns up, I wouldn’t take it as fact. Would be cool though!
Thamyris
I’ve heard about this one before! What’s funny is that when I originally attempted some digging behind it, I too couldn’t pin down a source for it! Not even his wiki page makes a remark about Apollo being involved in it. It’s simply a case of a guy getting too big for his shoes and spouting hubris.
So honestly? I think this is probably a case of misinformation. Though if anybody knows of a source that backs this version up, that’ll be great to know 😊 (I shall summon The Hyacinthus blog for this matter mark my words hi Pen)
Delphic Maxims
Now this is interesting! Because originally I was like “now this one I have no idea on” UNTIL I remembered something a member of the ToA Discord said…that the Delphic Maxims — and specifically, “Know Thyself” is attributed to Apollo’s daughter, the first Pythia of Delphi — Phemonoe. Now, I have nothing to back this up SO I shall ring that mutual up! @literallyjusttoa would you happen to have any information about this on hand?
I don’t know much about the claim it comes from Admetus, though. So I’ll leave it here for anyone who’d like to take a crack at it!
