A baby western lowland gorilla has been born at Philadelphia Zoo – thanks to some extra help from human medical personnel.

After complications, an ob-gyn, surgeons, anesthesiologists and other human medical staff were called to the zoo to help deliver this baby, the zoo says.

The mother and baby appear healthy, the zoo says, but will be monitored carefully by zoo staff in the coming months.

Western lowland gorillas are listed as Critically Endangered in the wild, with threats including habitat destruction due to palm oil and timber plantations as global demand continues to rise.

Tips to Stay Safe When Driving This Summer

With summer well on its way, many are anticipating the various activities to enjoy, such as going to the beach, fishing, concerts, and so much more. But just because the snow is gone doesn’t mean you should be less cautious when driving. Whether you drive across the country, a few states over, or stay in the local Philly area, it’s important to prepare for summertime driving. Before you set out on your adventure, check out these tips: Invest in a good pair of sunglasses Because the sun is extremely bright during the day in the summertime, it can make it difficult to see when driving. Keep a pair of sunglasses in your car to wear when driving to help you see when the sun is bright. Look for sunglasses that protect your from 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB light. Also, use your sun visor to help block out the sun and improve your vision.  

Share the road It’s important to remember that you are not the only one on the road. Warm weather means more motorcycles and bicycles on the road. Also, a lot of construction is performed in the summer. Abide by the speed limit, keep a safe following distance, don’t zig-zag throughout lanes, be patient, and be mindful of other drivers, bikers, construction workers, and pedestrians. Watch the daily forecast While summer brings us warm temperatures and sunny days, it also bring pop-up storms. Check the weather service and be prepared to stop if a storm is coming. If severe rain occurs, make sure your headlights are on, reduce speed, and provide extra distance between your vehicle and others. If the rain makes it too difficult to drive, pull over and out your hazards on.

 Use a sun shield when parked No one likes getting into a hot car in the summertime. To help keep your car’s interior heat down, place a sun shield beneath your windshield when parked.
