The Daily Kaylie: Network Till' You Get Work
In a world where continuing onto higher education after obtaining your high school diploma has become the “norm” you would think that getting a job after your college graduation would be expected, right? WRONG. We hear everyday statistics on the recent high unemployment rate and failing economy (oh how joyous our evening news is). You go through the process of writing college entrance essays, paying applications fees, making sure your SAT scores are high enough, and visiting various schools to eventually end up on a campus that you love. You register for all of these important and required classes, and then once you are sitting in class, you listen to your professors teach you some real world skills, but mostly, the skills you need to network.
As a college student studying strategic communications, I hear it all the time: “It’s not really about what you know, but who you know.” As I continue with my internship here at Phillybass’d Entertainment I am realizing that this is actually the fact of the matter. Paula has told all of the interns multiple times to invest in some basic business cards and carry them wherever we go. At the Underground Arts event that we attended, multiple people were asking us for business cards and we didn’t have any to give (as always, Paula was right). There are many different things you can do to keep a broadening networking circle:
· Keep a running list or file of people you meet, what their business is, and any contact information that will be helpful in the future
· Stay on good terms with EVERYONE (peers, professors, venue owners, etc.), you never know who you will need a favor from in the future, or who may need a favor from you.
· KEEP BUSINESS CARDS WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES (seriously)
· Interact with people through social networking- who knows, maybe a celebrity or business owner will contact you
· Keep in mind when you are working at other jobs, that those people may open doors for you unexpectedly, whether it is through recommendations or promotions- so always be on your best behavior
The list really goes on and on, you can truly never know too many people. Please don’t misunderstand what I’m saying as a college degree is extremely important because it will put you above other prospective interviewees. However, I think college is more valuable in the opportunities it provides through internship fairs, alumni business owners, and relationships you build with peers than anything else. Maybe my opinion is jaded because I am majoring in communications, which really is about experience and building relationships, whereas a science major needs more knowledge to obtain a degree to eventually get a job. Either way, there is a quote by Nelson Mandela that expresses exactly how I feel about education. He says, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” and I agree with that; it is how you choose to use your education that will make you dreams come true.
P.S.- that quote will be hanging in my cubical when it comes time for the contest (hint, hint, anyone sense a theme here…?)
