Jeremy Johnson’s parents have always been worriers. They worried about moving to Swynlake and raising their son there, they worried how he would fit in at school among Magicks, they worried about town disasters, and weird collective dreams, they worried about his future and making sure he’d get into a great university and whether he was getting into the right extra-curriculars. They worried about how he’d react when they had another kid after 13 years as an only child, they worried about whether his job would distract him from getting good grades, they worried about him going away to university and what degree he’d do, then they worried about whether him staying close was actually the best thing for him and if they’d agreed on the right degree.
Maybe because of that, Jeremy Johnson has never been big on worrying.
Things usually work out alright! I mean, once you’ve lived through a few major town disasters, it just puts everything else in perspective, right? But aside from that, life was pretty average for Jeremy Johnson. Compared to those around him he was, well, completely normal. The only thing he really stood out at was music - a hobby his parents pushed him into at an early age. Although playing in orchestras and singing in choirs lost its appeal the older he got, he kept going through the motions to be able to keep playing. He took the subjects he was best at at school, in a constant negotiation to be able to keep doing music as well, and has eventually found himself aiming to study Environmental and Sustainability modules at university so that he can get a job in Environmental Consultancy, which his Dad thinks is going to be a great career move. The thought kind of fills Jeremy with dread.
After finishing at school, Jeremy took a gap year. For the first time in his life he didn’t have things clearly mapped out and planned and it was… fantastic. He got to just go with the flow, bouncing between short term jobs to pay for his travels and meet new people. He even got to play around with music the way he wanted to. Jam sessions, open mic nights, even a couple of thrown together band performances. He loved it, every second. Now he’s returned to Swynlake, and is headed to Pride U just like he agreed with his parents, so he can stay close to home and his family, but how does he tell them that actually he’s not sure he wants to follow the path they’d all agreed on?
