“Lex, everything ok?” He whispered, entering his partner’s room, where he found them. Their brows were furrowed, while hunched over a guitar.
“I can’ts get this to work.” They grumbled, their ears folded back, staring at a sheet. “It’s either the wrong note, or wrong duration. It just sounds... off!” Ian sighed softly, before going to sit beside them. “Let me see.” He mumbled as he picked up the sheet.
It was sheet music, obviously, with scribbles all over it. “‘Build me up, Buttercup?’ That’s unlike you.” He whispered. “I thought you preferred playing rock.” The werewolf shrugged. Before sighing. “Ian, do me a favour.” They whispered. “Can you sing along to this? I wanna see if it’ll help.”
Ian was confused. Never had they asked him to... sing... normally it was the other way around. “Lex, I don-“ “Please?” The elf chuckled, “Don’t say I didn’t warn you!”
The wolf rolled their eyes, before gently strumming, their claws adding a vibrato to the chords as they moved from string to string. Their tongue gently stuck out as they concentrated. They wanted to get this right.
He took a deep breath, before starting. “Why, do you build me up, buttercup, baby? Just to let me down...” His voice was dragged out, full of emotion, his foot tapping along to the beat. “And mess me around, and worst of all, you never call, bab- ugh. I can’t do this!” He grumbled, head in his hands. He sat there for a couple seconds, before a big furry paw patted his back.
Alex’s eyes were wide. “You were fantastic!” They exclaimed, “You never told me you could sing!” Their ears were perked up, and their tail wagged.
“Well, I mean, I did do a lot of musical theatre when I was younger bu-“ “Can we do that again? I wanna hear you do the full thing!”
The elf smiled, before kissing their cheek. “Well, as long as I get to hear you too.” He gave them a quick peck on the lips before standing up.
“Shall we get started then?”
