Food photographers posses a very specialised talent, not only do they need skills within photography, they also need to have a strong understanding of the mechanics of food. There are many aspects to food photography, from the lighting to the lens to even a stylist. Each shot is painstakingly designed and prepared before it is photographed, and it is not unknown for each dish to be cooked several times throughout the day. The biggest problem when undertaking food photography is that, unlike clothes or people, the subjects will melt, sweat, wilt, dry out or sag, so timing, planning and preparation is of utmost importance.
