Forbidden Games (1952). A young French girl orphaned in a Nazi air attack is befriended by the son of a poor farmer, and together they try to come to terms with the realities of death.

This is such a tender, loving film, that it’s hard not to adore it. It beautifully captures the sideways damage of war, particularly on lower income families, and on children, who can never understand the full ramifications of what they’re enduring, and yet the film never loses its sense of care and of hope. It’s beautifully made, and beautifully told. 8/10.

Quand je pense à cette fille de malheur qui m’a mené là, voyez-vous, je ne sais plus comment j’ai pu en arriver si bas dans la boue, mais maintenant c’est fini et grâce à vous je vais me remonter et retrouver du Travail, il n’y a rien de tel et maintenant travailler sérieusement en fuyant le mauvais exemple.
