Pine Doors - A cheap and easy way to bring natural finishes into your home
Pine doors provide a cost-effective and easy way to bring natural finishes into your home.
Because pine is a fast growing timber it is readily available and many types of interior doors can be found making use of this renewable source of timber.
Pine is a very feature rich timber with a wide (fast growing) grain with plenty knots in the timber where the side branches and shoots would have been on the trunk of the tree. These features only add to the beauty of pine doors.
Pine is an easy timber to work with too and fitting is generally quite easy as it is a softwood. Basic tools are needed such as a saw, a plane, an auger, chisels(sharp ones), screwdriver and a bench and clamp to secure the door while you cut/plane it to size. If you're old-fashioned like me then you'll probably use manual tools but there are many electric planers and saws you can use if you want to.
Don't be scared just measure and re-measure as many times as it takes you to be sure and if a door casing is twisted or skewed then just ask a friend if you're not confident enough to do that one, there's no shame in asking for help!
Also, if in doubt Google "how to hang a door", I'm sure you will find lots of videos on YouTube that will help.
Be careful when clamping because before a pine door is varnished it's very easy to damage the timber which i've already mentioned is a softwood and so is.... yes you guessed it soft, which is why you need to treat it with a good quality varnish. Be careful not to put dirty or greasy marks on the door too when fitting and make sure you don't scratch it too as scratches will show up more when varnished especially if your varnish has a stain in it.
Brass handles look good on pine doors, silver not so much and you should select good quality hinges and locks, cheap ones will only need replacing and when you've fitted a house full of doors you will know how much you don't want to take them off again E V E R!
So that's pine doors in a nutshell, if you're looking for any then checkout http://bargaindoors.net they have a range of pine doors including internal double doors and the prices are pretty good. I know, biased but it's true, check them out see what you think and make your own mind up.
I'm refurbishing my home for Christmas and I'm fitting all new doors through the whole house and I'm choosing pine doors because they are cheap and quick and easy to fit and I will have money left in my pocket when I'm done.
That's it, had to share and there it is, not the wildest of reviews but what can you say about a pine door but if you're looking for inspiration then maybe this will help and it's worth a few buttons and if it gets more natural finishes into peoples homes then happy days.
