Real Blog Time: Giving Back
I keep telling myself I want to give back to the world, to the community, to people, etc. I want to do something that makes the world a better place. I do in my own way; by being polite, holding doors, smiling, and so on. But other than that I am fairly lazy.
It's a bit early to make New Year's resolutions, but I'm going to anyways, and I'm going to start before 2014. The holidays are here, and it's a better time than ever to do something good.
Last year I was a part of a Toys for Tots event put on by a local event coordinator that I knew. It was fun, but a little bit...all over the place. It was at a very country western themed bar, the photo booth was sloppy, the photographer never EVER posted or shared ANY of the photos taken that night, the pin up models (besides me) were late and left early, and the other activities that took place were of a totally different nature; like rave-esque glowing hoola hoops and dubstep. Which is totally fine, but the pin-up model retro theme thrown in there was totally out of place. SOOOO this year I'd like to set my MY OWN event. Which will be totally retro, pin up, burlesque, 50's, themed. I want to get live music (of the swing-y vintage persuasion), pin up models, burlesque performers, and local photographers, and set up a toys for tots charity night. The most important part however, is finding the right venue, and I am a bit clueless as of now. However, I'm going to collaborate with some other local pinups and try to set everything up hopefully by the end of next week.
Also, I signed up to do some volunteer work on Thanksgiving day to feed the needy/homeless in Austin. Which I'm happy about doing but not happy about getting up at 7am (considering I work until 2 am). But it'll be worth it. Since I'm mostly raw vegan, Thanksgiving isn't exactly my favorite holiday, and I have been saying FOR YEARS that I want to do something charitable Thanksgiving day instead of something gluttonous. So this year, maybe I'll actually get the chance to live up to my word.
I'd like to make a habit of doing things like this when the opportunity arises.
Also, on a totally more personal note, I got my first vintage clothing lot batch in the mail today. All clean and in perfect condition for reselling. A few more lots of this size and I will have enough to open an online store. But, before I can do that, I still need 1.) A nice camera for taking photos of my product. 2.) Some business organizing software, like quickbooks or something. 3.) Business cards 4.) Shipping supplies. I am going to get myself out of the service industry eventually goddammit! I know I will never get rich selling vintage, but it can be a part time gig, and then perhaps I'll be able to get another part time job...somewhere. It would help if I knew what I wanted to do. I majored in English and I do NOT want to be a teacher. Maybe I could get a job at my local Co-op grocery store so all my organic produce will be discounted! I don't know. I'm determined to have a normal life where I am not surrounded by booze, cigarettes, drunks, and the mild insomnia that comes hand in hand with working until 3 a.m.
Wish me luck y'all. I'm determined to grow up and do great things.
P.s. In other totally shallow unrelated personal news, an amazing English pin-up magazine has considered some of my images for publication! Fingers crossed they decide to do it!!
And p.p.s. My new boyfriend Scott has been very loving and supportive of all my decisions and has lots of faith in me and I appreciate him a ton.
