Top 3 not-to-miss London art shows this week
Looking for somewhere to cool off in this sizzling London weather? There’s no place like a good gallery to offer a moment of tranquility, inspiration and relief from the boiling heat outside. We’ve made a top 3 selection of the best exhibitions ending soon in London, so make sure you don’t miss out and visit them before they close.
#1. In Dreams
This is one of the most exciting curatorial themes we’re encountered in a while, that of sleeping and dreaming. Don’t imagine something overly abstract: this exhibition explores sleep-related themes in a quirky, experimental way, with immersive installations, cultural analyses and fun tests for you to learn more about what happens during your sleep. The art was arranged in the form of a journey through different states of sleep. offering surprising moments of recognition and lovely aesthetic experiences.
In Dreams is on until Saturday, 27 July.
#2. Etienne Viard: The Poetry of Instability
Our Number 2 is a classy selection of Etienne Viard’s recent work, a body of sculpture which almost seems to defy the laws of physics in the most graceful of ways. Explorations of object and balance, these sculptures respond well to the human scale and seem almost confrontational in their composition: they are always on the verge of collapsing, yet they give away an amazing sense of calm. Visit this show and fall in love with sculpture all over again.
The Poetry of Instability is on until Friday, 26 July.
#3. Static: Phantasms of the Living
We love this show because it pushes the boundaries of portraiture in unique ways, almost abusing a variety of materials and textures. Static is a two-man collective and they’ve done a brilliant job in using their different backgrounds and experimenting with a number of techniques, resulting in a tactile body of work which is fascinating to explore. This show also plays with the ambiguity between creation and decay, celebrating the features of materials and their evocative powers of figuration.
Phantasms of the Living in on until Saturday, 20 July.
