Treebeard

I love how Tolkien describes what I’m goin to call the “sentient forests”: the Old Forest and Fangorn. They have an almost alien quality to them, being “dim and frightfully tree-ish”, as if they can’t be fully understood by the Hobbits. In a way this makes sense, because all of the other races (Elves, Dwarves and such) are animal-based, for lack of a better word, but the Ents and Huorns are plant-based. I also love how these forests are described as being immeasurably old - lends itself to giving them a mysterious vibe.

There’s a lot more nostalgia-feeling in this chapter, with Treebeard saying that Lothlorien is fading and nothing is as it was when Celeborn was young. It’s really pertinent to how life is right now (at least it’s something I really feel: nothing’s as it used to be when I was younger). 😔

It’s interesting the way the trees of these forests are on a spectrum of wakefulness, between tree and Ent. The story of the Entwives is also interesting… the classic “women are very different from men”. I also like how Hobbits and Ents are two races that have been largely forgotten by the other races, yet they are two races who are very important to this story.
