Uluru elders explained,
After Pirampa (white people) arrived Anungu were forced to move away or were discouraged from looking after country the old way, by patch burning. That was when Anungu first started to see the huge bushfires that have killed off the country, in summers after years of good rainfall. When the first Pirampa started burning, Anungu were very worried because white people did not know the proper way to burn, nor did they know where the sacred places were, and so they burnt places that should have been left alone.²⁰
